Figure legend: The OceanObs09 meeting recommendations for a global XBT network. Frequently repeated lines are ideally occupied 18 times per year with a variable spatial resolution. They are designed to sample primarily the highly variable tropical temperature field. High density lines are ideally occupied 4 times per year with 50 km spacing between XBT drops in the ocean interior decreasing to 10 km as the boundaries of the line are approached. High-density lines when supplemented with other data are designed to observed components of meridional oceanic heat flux, for example.
