Catch a crab! This can be so much fun for kids and adults. At night, these huge crabs come out of their burrows and hunt for any food they can find. I’m very squeamish myself which makes this activity a delight for my kids when they hear me scream at the thought of one of these racing across my feet in the dark trying to hide in a burrow. Grab a bucket and a fish net (in the balcony box) and some flashlights (in the bathroom closet) and go for it – even you fearsome folks. For the serious catch and releaser, bring some sticks, string (yarn width, and some cheese cubes) to make a fishing lure and once they grab the cheese, pull them up and into the bucket. Little kids can’t get enough of this crabbing experience.

Take a night stroll. You couples who are visiting can’t miss the experience of walking hand in hand down the beach at night. The nice thing about this beach is that there is no curfew. When it’s clear, the moon is full, and the stars are in view, it’s absolutely breathtaking. Being on the island away from city lights gives you an impeccable view of the milky way and stars. Independent Kayaking

Photo taken from safest launch spot: North Topsail Beach Town Park kayak launch Independent Kayakers using our tandem kayak – be sure you have basic kayak training

Topsail Island is surrounded by the backwaters of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway and features some of the most beautiful tidal creeks and salt marshes anywhere. Elegant migratory birds such as herons, egrets, and oystercatchers use these salt marshes as nesting places. The tidal creeks are home to blue crab, fiddler crabs, oysters, red drum, minnows, shrimp and other wildlife. As we venture into the waterway, we may even encounter friendly dolphin!

Caution: be sure to wear some durable water socks or bring old athletic shoes with strong/thick rubber soles on your water adventure. Many shells in the ocean floor of the backwater sound are very sharp and easily slice open unprotected feet.
