Appendix 2: Miscellaneous Data and Facts

Figure 27 and Table 3 show the farm land distribution per Ksar (Gassem, 1986)

Figure 27: Farmland distribution per Ksar

Table 3: Farmland distribution per Ksar

  • Crops are planted in land subdivisions of about 30m2 each, surrounded by a small edge to keep the water in. This allows the farmer to use water effectively as different crops require different watering schedules, and rotate crops to avoid impoverishing the soil..

  • The Benbrahim well supplies 8 hours per day at 50m3 of water per hour

  • Tzadert water is sold at 25DH ($2.50) per kharouba (45 minutes)

  • Tzadert produces 128 kharoubas per day (24hrs.)

  • Tanttaout: The water distribution cycle of Tzadert spans 8 days. The first 7 days are used to distribute water to the owners of water shares. The eight day is called Tanttaout. All of the water of Tanttaout is sold and the proceeds go to the Water Council’s budget. The budget is mainly used to finance the maintenance of the infrastructure. There are situations where the Water Council uses their funds to finance projects or cover costs that are outside the realm of water. In 1903, for instance a war broke out between Figuig and France. When Figuig lost they used money from the Water Council budget to pay a penalty to France.

Demographics (Gassem, 1986)

  • 26 people per hectare of irrigated land

  • Women 55% men 45%

  • 19.6% of women over 15 are single

Wells

  • There are more than 45 wells ranging form 20 to 40 meters deep. The water contains high levels of salt and minerals.

Figure 30: Figuig population growth (Bonnefous + census)

Dip in population after 1945 could be explained by the surge in emigration after WWII.
