THEORY

  1. (a) Culture: Ife is the cultural headquarters of the Yorubas in Nigeria. It is a very classical art

(b) Location: ife, Nigeria

(c) Media: terra-cotta and bronze

(d) Characteristics: - scarifications of fine lines engraved vertically down the face

- art works are in life sizes

- some heads of sculptures are bald or caped

- the bronze heads show no eye brows but eye lashes and are cast with the cire- perdu process [10 marks]

2. (i) Variey, Balance, Rhythm, Proportion, Dominance, Repetition

3.- Linear perspective; This is the representation of the picture plane as directly viewed by the artist using foreshortening to depict depth. The nearer objects are bigger and clearer while the distant objects reduce in size and tend to fade away.

Parallel perspective; pictorial representation that deals mostly with horizontal lines and arrangement of objects in a two-dimensional way. All the objects facing the artist appear flat except the distance in the picture plane

Angular perspective; This type of perspective is used in representing objects that are three dimensional in appearance. The three sides of the object can be seen in in a such a way that it reflects the upright angle on the horizontal line

Aerial perspective; The type of perspective that deals with atmospheric condition and its effect on a picture plane. Hence, most of the colours in the distance are always greyish while the nearer colours are sharp and clear [10 marks]

4. (a) Hieroglyphics – this is an ancient Egyptian form of writing

(b) Figure drawing – The anatomical drawing of human beings

(c) Cire-perdu – it is a lost wax method of bronze casting. It was used for both Ife and benin bronze works

(d) Vanishing point - It is the point at which all parallel lines converge on a landscape drawing. All parallel lines in a perspective drawing meet at the vanishing point.

(e) Balance – it is one of the principles of art. It involves proper arrangement and rightful positioning of elements of art [10 marks]

5. (a) Immortalization of the soul and belief in after life; this belief drove their mummification of the dead

(b) Sculpture; They made relief sculptures, sculptures to depict their gods (sphinx) having animal head and human body. They also made sculptures to keep the mummy inside after embalmment

(c) Architecture; Due to the importance and the Pharaoh’s commands, the Egyptians gave serious attention to the construction of pyramids because they were regarded as royal tombs to symbolize the god-like power of the Pharaohs.

(d) Painting; their painting reflected royal activities, hunting, trading and agricultural life of the Egyptians. Painting was usually done on paper and on the wall, ceilings of tombs, temples and inner parts of pyramids

(e) The worship of one god; previously had worshipped many gods but King Akhnaton introduced the worship of the god Ra and caused Egyptians to depart from the conventional way of painting sculptures and rigid figures. [10 marks]
