Prayer of the Month

Lord Jesus Christ, give me the gift of cheerfulness – not a bogus artificial sort, but the real thing: a cheerful spirit deep within me; a cheerful countenance with which to face the world; a cheerful attitude to life with all its trouble. Help me never to spread gloom and despondency in others, but to impart hope, faith, and gladness; so that both I and the people around me can face life’s troubles with a little more trust in your infinite goodness and grace.

Amen

Village Link Deadlines for the next few months

From next month Village Link will look quite a bit different and hopefully much improved. But the deadline will be rather earlier in the month, too early for some, regrettably. In order to have Village Link bundles issued to the very helpful army of volunteer delivers it by the end of the month, the printers will need it by the Monday before that, and the editor needs all articles by the previous Thursday, although it might be possible to squeeze something in, if it is expected, over the weekend. But please note down the following list of dates:

Deadline Stop Press Bundled for delivery

March 2013 issue Feb. 14th Feb.17th Feb.22nd

The third column is the day when the bundles will be made up, and an insertion might be possible, by prior arrangement.

As before, every issue will be online at www.grimston.org so you can read it if you are away, or perhaps telling your friends about it, instead of posting it to them, if they have access to the Web.

Holly Meadows School

St Botolph’s Church Rocked! The school started the Christmas festivities for the local community in as big a way as we could manage by lifting the roof of St Botolph’s Church. The school play took place after dark, in the church, with all the children taking part in a version of the Nativity play, Rock Around the Flock! We all really enjoyed taking part in the singing and passing on the real message of Christmas.

The Reception children dressed up as lambs, bleating their way along the aisle, ably coaxed by the Year One shepherds. The Year Two innkeepers sadly refused the weary travellers at each of their inns before Mary and Joseph made it to the stable. The Choir of Angels filled the air with beautiful singing and the rest of the school chorused some traditional and modern carols.

The very successful performance was enjoyed by a church crammed full be delighted families and friends and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Our thanks also go to Reverend Howard and Margaret who helped us so much to make everything go so well for our first play in the church.

Holly Meadows 1st Ambassador: When I joined the school, I told the children that I hoped that I would be able to appoint some of my star pupils to be Ambassadors for the school. These Ambassadors would be able to greet visitors, conduct tours of the school, represent our vision and values for the school. The staff and I feel that we have found our first Ambassador:

Jordan Auker will be wearing a special Ambassador badge from now on and he will be called upon for special roles and jobs that others would aspire to be asked to do.

Jordan has shown a willingness to raise his standard of behaviour, to think of others beyond himself, to engage staff in interesting and informative conversation and to show a level of maturity that has impressed us above all others. We hope that we will soon be finding others that are worthy of this special role and who can follow Jordan’s example. Congratulations to him and good luck to all the others who are working to become an Ambassador too.

*** STOP PRESS*** STOP PRESS ***

Ewain Johns has been appointed the second Ambassador for our school. He has a special pastoral role as he has impressed the staff greatly with his ability to mentor pupils who are learning to make good choices with their behaviour. We wish him luck, also, with this challenging role. Well done.

Chinese New Year 2013: We are looking forward to a new and action packed term in 2013. We are starting the term with a whole school project on the Chinese New Year, the year of the Snake. If any of you have any knowledge or experience of China or Chinese food, have any Chinese artefacts or clothing that you would like to show us or anything related to Chinese New Year, we would be delighted to hear from you. We start in the first full week of the school term and hope that someone out in our community has something with which to enrich our learning ... please ring the school.

Thank you for all your support this year and we wish you all a very merry Christmas and a happy and peaceful New Year.

Rachael Williams, the staff

and pupils of Holly Meadows School

Incinerator Update

Around 400 people attended the Pre-Inquiry Meeting at Lynn Sport arranged on behalf of the Planning Inspectorate. It was an important meeting and it mattered that people came. Norfolk County Council Letters and an email sent the day before the meeting caused confusion leading some to think the meeting was not happening. If it had not been so well attended the Planning Inspector would have gained the impression people do not care what happens to West Norfolk, which would have been very unhelpful. Terrible sound quality meant few could hear what was said. Despite this difficulty the Planning Inspector went out of his way to treat people with respect and help them understand the inquiry process that lies ahead. When the main Inquiry starts in February it is expected that the sound quality will be much improved.

If anyone wishes to speak at the Inquiry they still can send an email to Robert.Cook@pins.gsi.gov.uk or write or him at 3/02 Wing, Temple Quay House, 2 The Square, Bristol, BS1 6PN. In either case quote Ref: APP/X2600/V/12/2183389. They would like some idea in advance what you wish to say.

There have been a number of venue changes and there may be more to come. The first day of the inquiry will be at King’s Lynn Corn Exchange, starting 10am on February 26th. The rest of that week it will be held at the Professional Development Centre, Kilham Way, just behind King’s Lynn fire station.

It is important people come along to the Inquiry. It is our best chance of defeating the incinerator so we must make the most of it. Nearer the time details will be published at www.KLWIN.com and farmerscampa ign.org. Please support us by coming to the inquiry and fund-raising events. The first Coffee Morning of 2013 is January 26th, 9am till midday. On February 9th at 7pm we have our Curry Night, Bollywood style. Both events are at Fairgreen Farms, Hill Road, Fair Green Middleton, PE32 1RN

Good Companions

On Saturday December 15th, twenty-two members and two guests went along to the Village Hall for the Christmas Party. Guests were greeted with a glass of sherry or fruit juice and the hall looked very festive, with lovely table decorations made by Valerie Durrant. Everyone brought a Christmas card and a wrapped Christmas gift which were distributed by a free raffle.

Shirley Hone and Freda Whitworth entertained the Club with amusing tales and Lou Smith played the piano for Bill Hone’s turn. In true pantomime fashion, Bill was dressed in a kilt and tam-o-shanter, with fake ginger hair(!), and he sang a couple of old-time Scottish songs ‘Keep right on to the end of the road’. And one which came out as ‘I belong to Grimston… the Old Bell is the place for me’. Lou played the piano for a sing-song of Christmas carols chosen from a sheet by members.

Ann Matthews and Margaret Gladman were thanked for their steadfast help during the year and were presented with bottles of wine. They helped to set out the tasty buffet, which was organised mainly by the Committee, and served tea and coffee. A lovely Christmas cake was made by Joy Smith and her daughter, Hannah.

Honorary Life Members, Barbara and Tony Moore, once again donated three boxes of beautifully fresh vegetables and fruit and even including a bunch of daffodils in bud. They are so thoughtful and generous and the Club thanks them so much. There was a free raffle for the boxes and the winners were Iris Baker, Henry Leman and Joan Marmont. Each box contained a bottle of wine donated by Grimston Stores, the Pine Parlour and Chris Spragg, who also sent along a bottle of brandy, which was won by Barbara Andrews. Grateful thanks go to these most generous and kind-hearted people.

Marion Allard gave a Vote of Thanks to the Committee for their hard work throughout the year and, as it is the season for saying “Thank You”, the Club would like to thank all those who arrive early at the hall to set up tables and chairs and who stay afterwards to clear and clean it.

If you would like to join the Good Companions Club for the over-60’s, please contact Nick Smith on 600769 or Shirley Hone on 600750. You would be most welcome to come for a taster, before deciding if you would like to join the Club.

Thankyou

Beryl and Stephen Watts would like to say thankyou for all the prayers and kind messages for Stephen during his recent illness. He is getting on much better now. Thanks again.

Beryl and Stephen Watts

Hospital Library Service

Have you ever been in hospital and seen the book trolley come round, and realised how much patients look forward to this service? The Norfolk County Library provides the books and St.John Ambulance volunteers take them round.

If you could give two hours a month on a Monday, starting at about 1pm, your help would mean so much to patients who may feel anxious and isolated when in hospital. Even if they don’t require a book a friendly word means a lot. Although you would become a St.John Support Worker, you only have to take books round. You don’t have to learn First Aid or do anything else! Your Car Parking at the hospital would be free.

If you are interested please contact me on 01485 600597 and I will give you more details.

Thankyou. Anne Knights

This Month’s Cover Picture

Late on December 31st, Grimston Church bell-ringers rang out the old year in the traditional way with muffled bells, then rang in the new year 2013 with a peal starting at the stroke of midnight. It was in fact the first time they had done this since 2000. the ringers stand in a circle to ring the six bells so it’s not easy to photograph them all in action, and the bells themselves are on the next floor of the tower, but at the end of the ring they stood in a line for a photo: left to right: Carol, Denny, Jo, Michael, Sue. Margaret., Sarah and Barbara.

Baptised in a Waterfall

Solveyg Fischer was born in the GDR, former East Germany, living there until 1998. Her parents were not members of a church, so she was educated as an atheist. Gaining a masters degree in philosophy in 1987, unfortunately she could not find relevant work, so since 1992 she has worked in different offices as a secretary, assistant or bookkeeper. In 2007 she moved to the Freiburg area. Here’s her story…

In summer 2009, when I was having a coffee with a friend, he was telling me about his last weekend, and about an English-speaking community in Freiburg. 'I know you don't believe in God' he says, 'but it would be nice if you came with me some time.'

I thought about it and went there with him the following Sunday. The first impression was: what friendly people! Shy and unsure what to do I sat in the last row, wondering curiously about what will happen. By the way, it was my first normal Sunday service, being a curious, open atheist, seeking something that was missing in my life.

What caught me very quickly was the warm, lively and at the same time contemplative (spiritual) atmosphere in the room. On the faces I saw joy, contentment, confidence, and expectant smiles. Glances, meeting mine, were saying 'be welcome!'. Then the priest started his sermon and touched my heart. In about twenty minutes it was like he was talking about what I had felt and experienced during the last few months in a very complicated relationship. Amazingly it opened a door for me. Behind it there was something or someone; what or who seemed to be more important than anything else. It or he was stretching out a helping, inviting hand to me.

After the service I was introduced to some people and had some short conversations, which made me feel invited to come again. And I did. I wanted to know more about what was behind the door. I saw a path, searching answers. I had been on a quest my whole life already but I didn't know what for. God or religion never were an option.

In the next weeks I started the most exciting journey of my life. I was at the service almost every Sunday, and met many lovely, meeting once a week, and a Bible study group called 'Roots and Shoots'. With them I started to read the Bible. Of course I had questions, some from the heart, some from the mind, some maybe naive, some provocative, some theological. All of them were answered patiently and with understanding by my new friends.

Much more surprisingly I started to talk to God, not even being sure whether he really exists. What I was sure about was the Holy Spirit: I felt his presence, in every group meeting, in every talk to one of my new friends. He was like a bridge for me. Gradually I realised: it was him behind the door. He called me home.

Finally I found the courage to open the door completely. I came as I was and the Lord welcomed me with his unconditional love. Suddenly I knew what I had missed and was seeking all my life—it was the Lord. He was always with me and protected me in all my trouble and crises. Finally I was whole.

Solveyg chose a local waterfall as an appropriate place for her baptism.

Explore the Bible

What can you say when you have tried to be a gentle, humble leader, but you are attacked and berated for ‘weakness’? Rowan Williams, now retired as Archbishop of Canterbury, tried to lead by consensus in the Anglican tradition. But he must often have wished he had the sort of power which other churches give their leaders. Both the New Testament letters from Paul to the Corinthians indicate that there was an element in this church which tended to discredit St.Paul's ministry and authority. 2 CORINTHIANS is one of the most personal of all of Paul's letters. Dwelling largely on his own ministry, he opens his heart and discloses his motives, his spiritual passion, and his tender love for the church.

In what is probably the least well read of his major letters, he longs for full reconciliation with his friends who have let other people come in and distort the teaching he brought to them, people who say that what is needed is firm leaders, who tolerates no opposition, and ridicule the sort of leader who has suffered many troubles, which have taken a toll on his health.

Paul has suffered much in his time, but he believes this enables him to get alongside people in trouble, and to testify to the healing grace of God, the merciful Father, from whom all help comes, who helps us in all our troubles. ‘If we suffer, it is for your help…’

Later in the letter Paul encourages the Corinthians to help others, as they had promised, but rather forgotten to do. He urges them to give in proportion to their considerable wealth (Corinth was a prosperous port) as others who are much poorer have already given so generously.

The final sentence of this letter has become a much-loved farewell prayer: ‘The Grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love or God, and the fellowship...’

Is Broadband a problem for you? ThinkingWISP could help…

Building on their successful pilot project ThinkingWISP have expanded their network allowing more homes and businesses to benefit from fast, reliable and high quality broadband.

ThinkingWISP is a next generation Wireless Internet Service Provider or WISP which offers a fast way to connect to the internet without the speed, cost or service restrictions of traditional solutions. As it’s a wireless system you can benefit even if your current internet speed is very slow because of where you live.

In addition, you do not need a BT line so there is the opportunity to save money.

ThinkingWISP has been created by a partnership of Norfolk based organisations. Norfolk RCC, AF Affinity and InTouch Systems have come together to provide communities in Norfolk with fast, reliable broadband connections.

In their first survey customers rated ThinkingWISP’s services as 100% very good or excellent overall and 100% very good or excellent for support services. All respondents also said they would recommend the service to a friend.

They are able to offer speeds from 3 to 10mb/s. These aren’t ‘up to’ or burst speeds but the actual speeds you get and you are covered by a 30 day money back guarantee.

To find out more about ThinkingWISP and how you could benefit, call 01603 558001 or visit www.thinkingwisp.co.uk

Good Neighbour Group

Norfolk Age UK is promoting the setting up of voluntary groups, designed to give local help to the aged: assist with small jobs, bulbs, fuses, mowing lawns, collecting prescriptions, collect shopping & provide transport to appointments, etc. and most of all to provide a friendly visit to isolated and lonely people. There will be a cost to set this up – for which funding will be found. A core group of volunteers will need to be set up to organise the volunteers and run the group. Are there any people out there who would be willing to give a little time to make sure that all the elderly in the village are cared for?  Please initially contact John Missing, Parish Clerk, who can give you further information and contacts. 01485 600875, Grimstonpc@btinternet.com

Greenfingers

The weather was atrocious, but the Village Hall was full for the final Greenfingers meeting of the year. Mrs Shelagh Ashe was asked to talk to the club during the drought in the early part pf the year, which explained why gardening in a dry area was the subject she had been asked to speak on. She reassured members that we do live in the driest region of the British Isles. Mrs Ashe talked about an extensive range of plants that thrive with little or no water after they have become established. The talk was accompanied by excellent slides, and Charles Fosgate as chairman gave a vote of thanks for an outstanding talk.

After the talk the Christmas spirit prevailed – time t talk over a glass of wine or orange juice, with light refreshments, and Charles gave out the 2013 programme: January no meeting, February 12th Easy Exotics, March 12th The Four Seasons, April 9th Spring Show & Annual Supper, May 14th Willow Weaving, June 11th Evening Garden Visit, June 13th Coach Trip, July 9th ‘On With The Show’ – how to present exhibits at the annual Show, July 31st Sandringham Flower Show, August 13th Grasses & Prairie Planting, September 7th Annual Horticultural Show, October 8th Making the Most of the Veggie Plot, November 12th A.G.M. & Bonsai, December 10th Seasonal Floral Decorations.

Plant of the month winners were Stephanie Whittley and Margaret Gladman (joint 1st).

There is no meeting this month, the next one being on February 12th at the Village Hall Pott Row, at 7 for 7.30pm when Liz Browne will be speaking on Easy Exotics. Annual membership is £9. mew members are always welcome.
