Long-term projects where the research is opportunistic in the sense that individual studies are planned on an ongoing basis, may have to repeat this approval process.
In the early days of the Mitel-CSER project
we conducted the work without REB approval out of ignorance, and because there was no formal mechanism for such approval within engineering. That was later rectified at the same time Canadian research ethics guidelines have been strengthened and harmonized.
