Give three reasons that you should study Spanish (page 3):



  1. Provides skills that will help you learn other languages you may want to study in the future.

  2. The United States has the world's second largest Spanish-speaking population as well as many job opportunities in which it is useful to know Spanish.

  3. Learning Spanish will allow you to enjoy songs, poems, and even movies in Spanish.

When do you use ¿Cómo estás? When do you use ¿Cómo está usted? What do they mean, and why are they different? (page 4, 5) ¿Cómo estás? Is the informal way to say How are you? and you use it when talking to your friends and family. ¿Cómo está usted? Is the formal way to say How are you? and you use it when talking to someone whom you have never met or someone that is older than you.

What's the difference between English vowel sounds and Spanish vowel sounds? (page 6)


English vowels can have long sounds and short sounds, but Spanish does not have long sounds for vowels. Spanish only has short sounds for vowels

Spanish comes from Spain, but was it always called Spain? What was it called originally? (page 8)

It was known as Hispania originally.

How did Spanish spread to all the countries that currently speak Spanish today? (page 8)

When explorers and settlers from Spain began to travel to the New World Spanish began to spread to other countries.

diecisiete - cinco = doce

quince + ocho = veintitrés

dieciocho + cuatro = veinticuatro

siete + seis = trece

once + uno = doce

Now, write out these problems in full Spanish words, and answer the problem using the Spanish words for the numbers as well.

Tres+diez=trece

Seis+ dieciocho= veinticuatro

In Argentina (in the Southern Hemisphere), is it or cold in July? Why? (page 4)


No, because due to the tilt of the earths rotation it is el Verano from December to march and el invierno from June to September therefore it would be cold during July.

What does carpeta mean in English? What do we call these words? (page 5)


Carpeta means folder and we call these workds false cognates aka false friends.

What does, “Son las siete y cuarto,” mean? What does “y cuarto” mean when we’re telling time? (page 1, 2)


It’s a quarter past 7. y cuarto means quarter past the hour in Spanish
