"The two witnesses are described as two olive trees and two lampstands (A.V. 'candlesticks') who stand before the God of the earth. This seems to be a reference to Zechariah 4, where a lampstand and two olive trees are mentioned... The olive oil from the olive trees in Zechariah's image provided fuel for the two lampstands. The two witnesses of this period of Israel's history, namely Joshua the high priest and Zerubbabel, were the leaders of Israel in Zechariah's time. Just as these two witnesses were raised up to be lampstands or witnesses for God and were empowered by olive oil representing the power of the Holy Spirit, so the two witnesses of Revelation 11 will like execute their prophetic office." - 349:180

GREAT TRIBULATION (beginning)

  The two witnesses will be killed, resurrected 3 days later and taken into heaven.
  

    PROGRAM OF SATAN

God will send two witnesses to prophesy against the Baal worshippers in Jerusalem. (Rev. 11)  These two witnesses will be representative of both the Old and New Covenants, as found in the imagery of the olive tree and candlestick in Zechariah and Revelation. John the Baptist and John the Evangelist are logical candidates for this prophetic mission, representing the Old and New Covenant respectively.  (Rev. 10:11 points to the return of John the Evangelist to prophesy during the Tribulation period.) At mid-Tribulation, the two witnesses will be killed as false prophets by the Beast that ascended out of the bottomless pit. (Rev. 11:7) See: Beast out of the Sea / Pan 4.A; Deadly Wound 11.I

The Grand Masters of the Prieuré de Sion have historically taken the name of John (Jean).  It is probable that the Antichrist will also assume the name John and pose as John the Divine (Baptist & Evangelist). However, even the 'Holy Saints John' revered by the Prieuré de Sion and the Masonic lodges are a subterfuge; in reality they represent the pagan gods, Janus, whose two faces are Janus and Saturn.

  "After 1188 [the Prieuré de] Sion is said to have chosen a grand master of its own, the first of them being Jean de Gisors. According to the 'Prieuré documents' every grand master, on assuming his position, had adopted the name Jean (John)--or, since there were four women, Jeanne (Joan). Sion's grand masters are therefore alleged to have comprised a continuous succession of Jeans and Jeannes, from 1188 to the present. This succession was clearly intended to imply an esoteric and Hermetic papacy based on John, in contrast (and perhaps opposition) to the exoteric one based on Peter.

Amongst Illumines of Copenhagen Christ's words in John 21:22 were taken to mean that in some mysterious sense St John was still on earth." - 256:56-57

    "Like others, Schelling saw St John as the apostle of the future. In concord with Moses, Elijah and John the Baptist in the Old Dispensation, he placed Peter, Paul and John in the New, representing the three stages in the Christian Church. Peter was the apostle of the Father, Paul of the Son, while John was the Apostle the Spirit who was leading mankind into the full truth of the future. The first stage was that of Catholicism, the second of Protestantism but the third will be the perfect religion of mankind." - 256:62-3

  False teachings abound concerning the timing and identity of the two witnesses.
  

"[Concerning Rev. 11:3-6] Expositors have differed as to which of the two periods [1st/2nd half of Tribulation] is in view here. From the fact, however, that the two witnesses pour out divine judgments upon the earth and need divine protection lest they be killed, it implies that they are in the latter half of the seven years when awful persecution will afflict the people of God, as this protection would not be necessary in the first three and one half years. The punishments and judgment the witnesses afflict on the world also seem to fit better in the Great Tribulation period.

"There has been much debate on the identity of these two witnesses. Some have suggested that these represent Israel and the church, or Israel and the Word of God, as the two principal instruments of witness in the world. Arno C. Gaebelein regards the two witnesses as representative of witness in the great tribulation: 'Perhaps the leaders would be two great instruments, manifesting the spirit of Moses and Elijah, endowed with supernatural power, but a larger number of witnesses is unquestionably in view here.' ...Others like J.B. Smith are quite sure that they are Moses and Elijah, because of the similarity of judgment afflicted to those pronounced by Elijah and Moses, namely fire from heaven, turning water into blood, and smiting the earth with plagues. Support for the identification of Elijah as one of the two witnesses is found in the prediction that Elijah will come 'before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord' (Mal. 4:5).  This seems to be at least partially fulfilled by the coming of John the Baptist according to the discussion of Christ with his disciples (Matt. 17:10-13; Mark 9:11-13; cf. Luke 1:17). Evidence for both Moses and Elijah is found in the fact that they are related to the second coming and the transfiguration (Matt. 17:3)... Govett identifies the two witnesses as Enoch and Elijah and cites in support early tradition and apocryphal writing..." - 349:178
