Null hypothesis (hypothesis supporting the status quo)

or greater. That is, the proposed modification will not lead to an improvement. The observed “92” is lower than this only because of random variation of the population mean. There is no reason to change, and the sample is misleading.
Alternative Hypothesis (hypothesis supporting change)

The sample mean being 92 reflects this. Therefore, a modification will lead to an improvement.
We now come to the issue of hypothesis testing: how do we decide?
Essentially, we put the null hypothesis on trial. That is, we start by assuming is true, and assess the evidence against it.
