Biodiversity undertakings To achieve increased biodiversity at farm level, enhancement of the eleven basic Measures is desirable. Because farmers are offered a choice from a series of optional undertakings, each farmer is given the opportunity to select the works most appropriate to the environmental or landscape features of the farm in question. At least two biodiversity options must be included in the farm plan, one of which must be a category 1 option. (The difference between the two category options is directly related to the cost of implementing the actions at farm level. To deliver a category 1 option, a farmer incurs a higher cost than for a category 2 option. Where the same action is available as a category 1 or a category 2 option, the difference is the area devoted to the action. For example, the area of traditional hay meadow to qualify for category 2 option is approximately one third of the area required under category 1.)
The objective of these mandatory undertakings is to further enhance the promotion of biodiversity on farms by encouraging farmers to select environmental options best suited to their own farm.
