1. INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the project
A home that uses internet-connected gadgets to provide remote monitoring and administration of systems and appliances, such as lighting and heating, is referred to as a smart home. Homeowners can control smart devices with smart home technology, also known as home automation or domotics (from the Latin "domus" meaning home, which offers security, comfort, convenience, and energy efficiency. This is frequently done through a smart home app on a smartphone or other networked device. Smart home systems and devices, which area part of the internet of things (IoT), frequently work together, sharing consumer usage data among themselves and automating activities based on the preferences of the homeowners. Home automation offers homeowners peace of mind by enabling them to monitor their properties from a distance, preventing risks like a forgotten coffeemaker left on or a switched on security light. User preferences can be accommodated in smart homes for ease. For the more advanced smart home systems, users can set their garage door to open, lights to turn on, fireplace to light, and preferred music to play when they arrive, for instance [1]. About 1.7 million Ugandan households are currently connected to the national electricity grid, according to Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA. On average, a Ugandan household, according to Uganda Bureau of Statistics, is composed of at least five persons, which means that approximately 8.5 million Ugandans have access to electricity [2]. Unfortunately, not only is the availability of energy in the majority of African nations unreliable, but it can also be rather expensive. This is especially true when compared to some indicators like these countries' average incomes and GDP per capita. Such is the situation in Uganda where the average household electricity price as of March 2022 was at $0.19 per one kilowatt hour of electricity [3]. Smart home technology could do a lotto help Ugandan households use electricity more efficiently. This technology provides homeowners with the ability to remotely monitor which appliances are on or off at any given time, automate the times when lights and other appliances are on or off, among other features which would directly translate insignificant reduction in power wastage and monthly costs in any household.
