Project Proposal 19U18212PSA 19U0479
1.5 Project development questions
The following key questions will be considered Which affordable wireless module will be used to enable remote communication between the smart box and the user's remote computer system Which affordable electronic switches will be employed to break and complete circuits so as to turn on/off appliances

3 Which affordable current meters will be employed to keep track of the on/off state of heavy appliances (those connected to dedicated circuit breakers Which affordable microcontroller will be used to govern the operations of this embedded system Wherein the preexisting installation will the smart box be placed so as to perform its duties without compromising the already existing devices and systems, most especially the home electrical protection system
1.6 Significance of project
This project is important because the available home automation technology, though plentiful, is inapplicable to the average Ugandan household. Having looked at dozens of home automation systems designed by various individuals, the common trend is that the vast majority of them focus on single appliance control and come with severe modification to the existing home electrical installation. This system however focuses on controlling entire circuits in the already existing electrical installation with all appliances connected to a particular circuit breaker be controlled collectively as a batch by a single electronic switch. The effect of this will be a more compact system that will be affordable to design and cost friendly for the average Ugandan homeowner. Additionally, having reviewed various existing home automation projects designed by numerous individuals, it is evident that many of them do not incorporate active energy management features. They are predominantly focused on switching and convenience. Our system on the other hand keeps track of a home's energy usage and effects modifications to the energy consumption when a preset threshold of used energy in a month is crossed. Furthermore, this system provides an affordable alternative to the very expensive mainstream smart home technologies that are on the market such as smart bulbs and smart plugs whose hefty prices have already been mentioned. This will be primarily a result of the simple fact that this system will operate as a single unit controlling already existing electrical equipment.
