LABOR PARTY PREPARES FOR 'GREAT STRUGGLE'

Tbilisi, 19 February ’04, Inter-Press. - The Georgian Labor Party is preparing election list for the March 28 parliamentary elections. The presentation of party's election list will be held on February 26. Labor Party Leader Shalva Natelashvili said on Thursday that the election list won't include famous representatives of culture and art, stressing that it will be comprised of only politicians. 'We are preparing for a great struggle, since the new authorities is expected to do everything possible no to let the Labor Party win seats in the future Parliament. After March 28 we shall have to launch another phase of the straggle,' he emphasized.


GOVERNMENT, OPPOSITION AT ODDS OVER ELECTION COMMISSIONS


Tbilisi, 18 February ‘04, www.civil.ge. - President Saakashvili expressed readiness to give up the government’s two seats in the lower level election commissions in favour of the opposition parties. However, the authorities refuse to change the composition of the 15-member Central Election Commission (CEC), where most of the seats – eight – are under the government’s control. The opposition parties agree to receive two more seats in the lower level commissions, but demands to introduce relevant amendments to the election code. However, the President said that the amendments would not be possible to introduce amendments before March 28. The conclusion of the international observation mission, which monitored elections in Georgia, suggested “the political imbalance in the composition of the election administration at all levels caused serious concern.”

NDP-TRADITIONALISTS REGISTERED WITH CEC AS ELECTION BLOC


Tbilisi, 17 February ’04, Inter-Press. - Two political parties, which have recently formed a coalition 'National Democratic Party - Traditionalist Union' has submitted an application to the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Georgia on creating an election bloc. This is the first election bloc registered with the CEC as an election bloc. The Central Election Commission (CEC) of Georgia has registered 47 political organizations wishing to run in the parliamentary elections scheduled for March 28. Political parties are to tender applications on creating election blocs with their charters until February 19.

"UNITED DEMOCRATS" TO LIQUIDATE THEIR ELECTION REGISTRATION IN A FEW DAYS

Tbilisi, 18 February ’04, Prime-News. – "Socialists" are calling upon the entire opposition to unify for opposing undemocratic course of new authorities. As one of the leaders of the parliamentary faction "Socialists" Zakaria Kutsnashvili declared at the press conference on Wednesday, the duty of the opposition is neglecting ambitions and doing everything for unification unless it would be betrayal of trust of voters of the opposition and denying existence of different opinion in the country. "If unification fails to take place and all groups participate in March 28 elections independently the country will face undemocratic course", Kutsnashvili noted. According to him, "Socialists" hold consultations with certain political forces though the final decision is not made so far. […]

PRESIDENT READY TO MAKE CONCESSIONS IN ELECTORAL ADMINISTRATION STAFFING


Tbilisi, 17 February ’04, Caucasus Press. - <The President of Georgia is ready to make concessions when staffing the electoral administration,> Parliament Speaker Nino Burjanadze told journalists after consulting with Mikheil Saakashvili and CEC Chairman Zurab Chiaberashvili late last night. Nino Burjanadze said. Zurab Chiaberashvili stated that the President clearly expressed his readiness for compromise but stressed that the concessions will concern only electoral administrations at the lowest level. The concessions will not embrace the CEC and the number of members of the opposition in district and precinct commissions may increase.

CEC AGAINST THE ADJARA VOTERS' DATA


Tbilisi, 17 February ’04, www.rustavi2.com. - Central Election Commission (CEC) may announce the results of the parliamentary elections in Adjara invalid due to the significant difference between the voters' data possessed by the CEC and by the Adjara leadership. 300 000 electors voted in November 2 parliamentary elections, while this number was four times less in January 4 presidential elections. Despite such divergence, Adjara leadership refuses to conduct new registration of the voters, while in its turn the CEC refuses to accept the existing data, which the CEC authorities assess as forged.
