INGRAM

Robert

Jett

Tuesday, July 24, 1956

Robert Jett Ingram, Jr. (Rob), 46, a recent resident of Staunton, died suddenly Thursday, June 5, 2003, at his home. He was born July 24, 1956, at Fort George G. Mead, Maryland, but spent his early years in Pulaski, Virginia. He is a graduate of Pulaski High School where he participated in varsity football and other sports. Thereafter, he attended and was a 1978 B.A. graduate of Washington & Lee University with a double major in politics and religion. In 1981, he received his Juris Doctor degree from the Washington & Lee School of Law. While in law school, Rob was a writer for the Washington & Lee Law Review. Subsequently, he entered the private practice of law with the Gilmer, Sadler, Ingram, Sutherland & Hutton law firm in its Blacksburg office. Over the years, Rob's law career encompassed a wide spectrum of pursuits, as a plaintiff's counsel, as a defense attorney, as a solo practitioner and as a public prosecutor. During this time, Rob was privileged to have served with the Atlanta, Georgia law firm of Hurt, Richardson, Garner, Todd and Cadenheand; with the Roanoke law firm of Wooten Hart; and with the Charlottesville law firm of Tremblay & Smith; and as a Deputy Commonwealth's Attorney for the City of Waynesboro. From 1994 to 1998, he also served as an Administrative Hearing Officer for the Supreme Court of Virginia, primarily hearing cases for the Department of Education and the Department of Employee Relations Counselors. Having a lifelong yearning to be more involved in His Lord's work, Rob took a sabbatical from his law endeavors in 1988, entering Yale University to attend its Divinity School. He received his Master of Arts in Religion from Yale University in 1990. During his time at Yale and because of his legal background, Rob served as Special Counsel to the President of Yale University, having been recruited by that office to act as Special Liaison with the University's major benefactors, providing legal and political accounting for the use of its grants. Following Yale, he returned to the private practice of law in Virginia, moving to Charlottesville. Recently, Rob enjoyed serving as a special attorney with the Virginia Office for Protection and Advocacy, in its Staunton office, an agency dedicated to serving the disabled and other disadvantaged citizens throughout Virginia. Rob never met a stranger and loved all people. His engaging smile, quick wit, gift of conversation, and his competitive advocacy for his law clients will not be readily forgotten. Rob's life as a Christian lawyer, as a Sunday School teacher, as a lay reader for his church, as a member of the Diocesan Commission on Ministry, and as a civic volunteer was a search that served God and others. He had an innate desire to become a priest in his own right and to be ever closer to his Maker; now that dream has come to pass. His many friends and loving family will always cherish his special time with us. Rob Ingram is survived by his parents, Jacqueline M. Ingram of Pulaski County, Va.; and Robert J. Ingram of Radford, Va.; sister and brother-in-law, Lyn and Webster Day and their sons, Cricket, Bladen, and Robbie Day of Roanoke, Va.; brother and sister-in-law, Carter and Julie Ingram of Christiansburg, Va.; stepmother, Janet L. Ingram of Radford; and a very special friend, Billie Guill of Staunton, Va. A memorial service will be conducted Tuesday, June 10, 2003, at 2 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, Pulaski, Va. The Right Rev. Neff Powell, Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Southwestern Virginia; the Rev. Ed Covert, Rector of Emmanuel Church in Staunton; and the Rev. Dr. W. Randall Frye of Pulaski First United Methodist Church will conduct the service. The family will have a private interment service prior to the memorial. The family will also receive friends following the service in the Family Life Center at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any contributions be made to the Episcopal Diocese of Southwestern Virginia, PO Box 2279, Roanoke, VA 24301-0975, or other charity of your choice. Arrangements by Stevens Funeral Home, of Pulaski.
