Topic-151: Lexical and Emphatic Stress

In terms of its linguistic function, stress is often treated under two different headings word lexical) stress and sentence (emphatic) stress. Lexical stress is basically related to the primary stress applied at syllable level (when only one syllable is stressed) that has the ability to change the meaning and the grammatical category of a word as in the case of ‘IMport’ (noun) and ‘imPORT’ (verb. Sentence level stress, on the other hand, is applied on one word (rather than a syllable) in a sentence thus making that word more prominent (stressed) than the rest of the words in the sentence.
