Topic-072: Auditory Vowel Space
Vowel sounds are tricky to be described phonetically accurately because they are points, or rather areas, within a continuous space. A language has a certain finite number of contrasting vowels, each of which maybe represented with a discrete alphabetic symbol but phonetically each will correspond to a range of typical values, and between any two actual vowel sounds there is a gradient continuum which determines the dimensions of auditory vowel space. Phonetically, the four vowels i, æ,
ɑ, u (as given in the cardinal vowel system) give us something like the four corners of a space showing the auditory Copyright Virtual University of Pakistan
