Middle Years Programme

Implementation of the Areas of Interaction
C

Implementation of the Areas of Interaction
The Ridgeview Charter Middle School and Riverwood High School MYP partnership has developed several initiatives in order to support the implementation of the Areas of Interaction within the programme.
Initiative #1 – Structures
Both schools have adopted the same unit planner document which requires the teacher to include both the Area(s) of Interaction being used for the unit of instruction as well as a description of how the AOI directly connects to the unit. All MYP teachers receive internal training which includes training in the use of the document and the use of Areas of Interaction. In this training teachers are instructed to vary the Areas of Interaction that they include in their units. Teachers submit a copy to the Coordinator who then tracks AOI usage using the document below. This document was piloted at the middle school during the 2007 – 8 school year. Use of this documentation will begin at the beginning of the 2008-9 school year.
Initiative #2 – Time
Both schools have created teaching schedules which allow for horizontal and vertical planning (within a grade level and across grade levels). In addition, teachers have been granted release time in order for staff from both sites to plan and share collaboratively. In the 2007 – 8 school year, the county created adopted a calendar that included five early release days where staff have one half day which is used for professional development. In the 2007-8 school year one of those days was used for level 1- 5 facilitated collaboration. The middle school used one additional day for MYP planning and the high school used two additional days for MYP training and collaboration. Both schools are working on a plan to use a majority of the days in the 2008 – 9 school year for MYP related collaboration and training.
Initiative #3 – Organizational Structure
Both schools have created leadership teams for the programme. A key position on this team is the AOI leader. Their role is to assist the coordinator in encouraging all staff to examine and increase the effective use of the Areas of Interaction. This person works closely with teachers to assist them in the creation of MYP units, particularly in the varied use of Areas of Interaction by each teacher. Each grade level and discipline team meeting includes discussion of Areas of Interaction and information from these discussions is included in the team meeting notes.
Initiative #4 – Communication and Common Planning
To facilitate communication and the sharing of information between the sites, coordinators at both sites meet regularly to discuss initiatives, strategies and issues. All documents, assessment criteria, planning templates and submitted units are placed in shared solders that are accessible by all staff at both sites. As stated previously, the county and local administrators provide release time for common planning within each MYP level of instruction, as well as vertical planning across levels 1- 5.
Initiative #5 – Interdisciplinary initiatives
MYP coordinators at both sites help teaching staff to identify opportunities for interdisciplinary initiatives. During the 2007 – 8 school year several were identified and completed. These initiatives were conducted at the middle school: Hispanic Heritage, Reading Across Ridgeview and Olympic celebration.
