Middle Years Programme
Justification for Partnership
Justification for a partnership between Ridgeview Charter Middle School and Riverwood High School
Riverwood High School was authorized to offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program in July, 1999. Riverwood High School is the sole International Studies magnet school in Fulton County, Georgia. The quality of the IB program at Riverwood has led to the county allowing the school to accept tuition paying students from neighboring counties.
In 2002, because of the changing demographic makeup of the neighborhood and the challenge of meeting AYP, Ridgeview Middle School began an investigative process to explore the possibility of converting to charter status.
During the research process, it was found that the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme embodied many of the concepts the administration, staff and community wished ti implement in the school. As a part of the investigative process a site visit was arranged to an MYP school in Virginia.
As a result of the research examined and the information gained during the site visit, the core team reached a unanimous decision that the Middle Years Programme was the best alternative and framework to improve student success.
Once that decision was made the administration teams at Ridgeview and Riverwood began discussing and planning how to implement the Middle Years Programme as a whole school, grade 6 – 10 program at both schools. The major reason for the desire to form this partnership was that Ridgeview is the sole feeder middle school for Riverwood.
Since that time, the MYP implementation has been a joint effort of both schools. The administration and coordinators of both schools meet regularly to assure effective rollout and smooth transition for their students.
