Intersubjectivity (cont.)

  • Social Interactions among individuals through comparison, agreement, and confirmation of each other’s perceptions make it easier to determine real events occurring in society.
  • It also refers to the shared perception of reality between or among two or more individuals.

Intersubjectivity of Human Beings

1. Human being is a social being
- As social beings, communication among humans is a necessity. It does not only transform the social context but also their perspective on existence and its meaning. Since communication is necessity toward intersubjectivity, it also becomes a means towards meaningful existence.
  • Dialogue – when individuals begin to view each other as an other. That is truly acknowledging each other presence. Then that is the beginning of an authentic relationship and dialogue. It is a deep and genuine relationship between persons.

  • - it happens when two persons truly acknowledge each other’s presence and treat each other as equals.

2. Human being is born and creates himself/herself in social interaction.
The existence of human beings is the consequence of social interaction particularly between two unique individuals. They together strengthen this interaction through constant communication. From such communication, they establish communion of lives that leads to the establishment of family where the basic interactions are realized. Such communicative interaction becomes matrix in which each person participates, adopts, and absorbs the values, system, beliefs and world-view that pervade and harmonize among individuals in the social interaction.

How does INTERSUBJECTIVITY define our interaction with other persons?

  • Empathy – also known as the ability to share emotions. This emotion is

  • driven by a person’s awareness that the other is a person with thoughts and
    feelings.
  • Availability – the willingness of a person to be present and be at the

  • disposal of another.
  • Ethics of Care- an ethical theory that emphasizes the moral dimensions

  • of relationships and interaction.
