PointGrab has set out to deliver an input device that combines the mouse's convenience with the touchpad's portability. PointGrab's pointing device utilizes a low cost integrated webcam to track hand and finger movements over the keyboard area. Motion is translated into on-screen cursor movements and simple gestures simulate mouse buttons and other mouse functions. Both hands may be tracked simultaneously for increased efficiency or to activate advanced functions such as zooming and rotating, as in multi-touch interfaces. The technology allows individuals to take self portrates without the extended arm effect. PointGrab's patent pending technology utilizes real time computer vision and image processing algorithms to create a pointing device operated by the user's hands.
