The second largest fish in the world is the Basking Shark.
The basking shark like the whale shark is a plankton-eating (small and microscopic organisms drifting or floating in the sea) using its greatly enlarged mouth and highly developed gill rakers. This species is found in all the world's temperate oceans and will migrate to warmer water during the winter. They can grow to over 40 feet long and weighing up to 40,000 pounds. Commercially, it is fished for food and fishmeal, the hide for leather, its liver for oil, and for its fins for shark fin soup.
