John Finley came she thinks to America about 1681 & lived in Salem Co NJ. Look for his will there & deeds to him & see if it shows where he came from. 10/15/27 We think he is the John born Apr 9, 1636 see Anjou P 34 & my book 21 p 476. [children] David Finley, He kept a hotel & after his death, his widow succeeded to the property & voted by reason thereof & was assisted in the management by her son David. His children were all born in Pennsville, NJ Mary Finley, oldest, married John Casperson. Both died in Salem NJ. Sarah Casperson, married 1 Dunn & had 2 or 3 children. Married 2 James Fogg & had 3 children. All dead. Thos Dunn, youngest Dunn was living at Alloway, NJ Nehemiah Dunn, Dunn son Fogg Son died young A daughter, married Chew lived in Camden, NJ Dau, married a Wood Thinks living Mary Casperson, B [does he mean married?] Cooper Griscom. Lived on a farm near Salem NJ Had children. Mrs Bates could give record & also abt Tobias. Tobias Casperson, married John Finley, married & died & was buried at Penns Neck Tamzan Finley, married Strech a Salem man. Had but one child. She was his 2d wife. He had children by his 1s wife. Debbie Strech died unmarried aged abt 30 buried in Canton, Salem Co NJ as is her mother. Rushie Finley, never married. Died out West thinks in Wisconsin where he was a lawyer. Ask Mrs Camp. Mary Finley, married Wm Patterson, a farmer in Alloway Tp. Both dead. Had 6 children, some died young Horatio Finley Patterson, married. Charilla Patterson, married Lillie Patterson, married Horatio Finley Patterson, single was on farm with his mother. Mary Patterson, married Joseph S. Bates. Both living at Alloway NJ. She is the one to see for record. Has 4 children living & 3 dead. All 4 married. Rebecca Finley, married Calvin Camp Hotel keeper in Salem NJ & Phila. Had 5 children 3 living & 2 dead Lavina Camp, single, lives in Phila & is the one to see for record. Lillie Camp, married Mintzer James Camp, married & living in Phila John Camp, d.y. Samuel Finley [son of David] married & thinks lived & died at Penns Neck Andrew Finley, died on Spring Garden St near 21st. Was a lawyer married a Quaker & lived to be 94 yrs old & is buried in the Quaker Graveyard at Salem NJ. He is the only child of Samuel that Mrs Corson ever heard of. He was a tall stout man abt 6 ft tall. Mrs Corson only knew of one child viz Samuel married twice Saml by 1st wife & 3 girls by 2d wife. Samuel Finley, he died 3 or 4 yrs ago aged 87. Married 1, Married 2 Gilmore or Gilman. He was a gilder of glasses, mirrors etc. He was a medium sized man. Job Finley, married & lived at Salem NJ No issue Richard Finley, a farmer at Salem, NJ married. Don't know about his children. Another son thinks name George Finley, Thinks this was William's father. William Finley, lived in Phila near Wylie St Dead 25 yrs. Was down on slavery, stole slaves & shipped them back to Africa. Had 5 daughters, no sons. Anna Mary Finley, ob, married Ohl & lived & died in Phila on Turner St, No issue. Sarah Finley, ob married an electrician & had one son who died aged 10 or 12 & a daughter. A daughter married & lives near Wylie Sts Angeline Finley "Jennie" ob, married Simmons who was in theatrical business. No issue. Margaret Finley, ob married Harris & lived in Germantown, Pa. He was a Catholic. Had several children. Amanda Finley, ob, married. He died 6 mos ago. No issue. Rev George Finley [son of George] a Methodist, Dead. Lived in Ohio Rev David Finley, a Methodist, Dead, lived in Wisconsin Hannah Finley, ob, married Giberson. Lived just below Wilmington, Del. Emily Finley, ob married Stoops. Lived in Wilmington Del. Thinks he had 3 daughters who lived in Woodstown, Salem Co, NJ Richard Goslin, ob, married Susan Stratton was a farm carpenter & a builder in Salem Co NJ. Had 10 children born in that Co. Samuel Goslin, ob, married. She living. Had several children Big [unreadable] Mary Goslin, married Foster. Live in Woodstown NJ & have issue. George Goslin, ob rather young at Salem, single Laura Goslin, married 1 Stanley Gilman. He died & she married 2d Champion. Has 3 children by Gilman & lives at Glassboro NJ Gloucester Co. Sallie Goslin, married, living in Woodstown NJ Emma Goslin Priscilla Goslin Thomas Goslin, married, lives in Wildwood, Cape May Co, NJ Rebecca Goslin, ob of consumption age abt 46 yrs single Charlie Goslin, lives on the homestead in Salem Co just outside of Salem NJ. Lives in Norristown. Charles H. Finley married Kent [best guess] Bolton. He lives in Norristown & has 5 girls & 1 boy dead. Annie Finley married & is a widow. His name Rochelle. Has 5 or 6 children. He has been in hospital & had operation for appendicitis. Theatrical man. Isabella Finley, married Bell of White Star Line. Living in Germany. James H. Finley, lives in Norristown, Pa & has one child Maude Finley, married Land & lives with her parents Albert Vernon Finley, lives at 131 Roscomb St here has 3 children, 2 boys & 1 girl Florence Finley, married. She is the youngest William Finley, dentist in NY Albert Finley Richard Finley [son of David b 1781] B Dec 23, 1815 ob July 22, 1904 married Eliza Best. Lived in Norristown, Pa. She born Apr 1816 & died June 15, 1900. Martha Finley B Dec 20, 1840 ob June 11, 1915 married Chas Artzt ob. Charles Artzt ob married. No issue Elizabeth Artzt, ob married & died & left 1 child, a girl. Annie Artzt, married Wm Knorr. He died 8 yrs ago. She living. see page 545. Lives here in West Phila at 49th & Springfield Ave abt 4823 Springfield. Married June 15, 1872 in Phila to Thos Edward Prettyman B May 24, 1842 in Delaware & died Nov 10, 1922 son of James Asbury Prettyman & wife Elizabeth Little. Harriet Finley, B Aug 6, 1862 single lives with her sister at 454 Springfield Ave. They should have record. Seaman & his wife Anna M. Forbes. Had four children, oldest my informant born in Phoenixville, Pa & the other 3 in Norristown, Pa. He was a grocer in Norristown, Pa see page 534. Susan Israel Finley, ob married to James Knox ob Chas Henry Knox married Lost. No issue. Lives in Workingmans Home at Lancaster 36th St Phila aged 86 yrs. 2 daus. See him for record. Sarah Louisa Corson, B Dec 14, 1877 married June 17, 1897 in Phila, Pa by Bishop Hoffman reformed Episcopal to Walter Etter Oakford born Mch 5, 1875 in Phila, Pa son of Isaac R. Oakford & wife Francis Bain. He is now a minister for over 20 yrs in the Reformed Episcopal Church. Both living in Glassboro, NJ. Have had seven children 5 living & 2 dead, all born in my informant's house 2443 W. Oxford St, Phila, Pa. Live in Phila Frances Corson Oakford, B Feby 23, 1907 teacher in NJ Miriam O. Corson Oakford, B Nov 2, 1905 ob Sept 12, 1906 LeRoy Corson Oakford, B July 16, 1908. In high school Mildred O. Corson Oakford, B July 1, 1910 ob May 16, 1911. Abraham Seaman Finley, [son of Thomas McKenzie Finley] b Sept 12, 1850 got this record in Norristown, Pa Nov 3, 1923 which see. Louisa Charilla Finley, B Dec 11, 1858 ob Apr 11, 1900 unmarried Norris Montgomery Finley, b July 8, 1862 ob June 22, 1922 married 1 Nellie Faunce born abt 1866 & he got a divorce abt 1900. Had one child. Married 2d June 1902 to Ella Hunsberger born Apr 1863 & lives here in Phila, daughter of Hunsberger & wife Hallman. No issue. A daughter, died aged 6 weeks. V16 Page 535 At residence of Mrs Florence Wright No 5554 Catherine St, West Phila, Pa July 9, 1926 7:55 PM I arrived here half an hour ago & was admitted by Florence's husband who called his mother in law & a little later, his wife came in. Mrs Susan Wright says she does not have the family bible of her father, Wm Rothermel, but she thinks it is in possession of Miss Bertha Smith No 41 S. 11th St, Sunbury, Pa. She is the daughter of Rebecca Rothermel, the oldest of the twelve children of Wm Rothermel. This niece also has an old Hunter German bible which has a family record in it. Miss Smith is 53 yrs old & lives by herself. Both Susan & Florence Wright say that Susan's grandfather Abraham Rothermel was a first cousin of the father of the artist, Peter F. Rothermel who painted the Battle of Gettysburgh, Pa. She never asked what the name of her grandfather Abraham's father was. Susan says her sister "Kitty" Raker lived from her youth with her grandmother, the wife of Abraham Rothermel nee Mary Hunter who lived to be 93 yrs old. Kitty V16 Page 536 Raker left a daughter Mary who married a man named Yordy & both are living in Sunbury, Pa where he is a janitor. They think Mary ought to know much about the Rothermel family, that her mother learned from her aged grandmother. She is probably 56 or 57. Mrs Susan Wright is undertaking to give me the list of the children of her grandfather & her father in the order of their ages & I am commencing a genealogical table on page 538. Susan remembers well her grandmother Rothermel a small woman & loved her dearly, but says her grandfather Rothermel was dead before she was born. Her grandmother told her that her husband, Abraham Rothermel was a large man of over 6 ft tall. They say that Mrs Robert Halfpenny (nee Florence is daughter of Reuben, Uncle of Susan. Her husband is in the hardware business there. Says her grandmother Mary told her she was from Reading Pa. Susan was but 6 yrs old when her father died. Susan says five of her Uncles were buried in Laurel Hill Cemetery here viz: Saml H., Lewis, Joel, Daniel & Reuben Rothermel. Her own father & the baby Isaac are V16 Page 537 buried up where their parents are buried. Her Aunts Maria Isenhart, Catharine Dunkelberger & Susan Hensyl are buried at Hunters Sta with their parents & Anna Wagner is buried out in Illinois. Fred Cope's father was President of the Phila Savings Fund Society for thirty years. Maria Bohner's six sons see page 540 were her pallbearers. Florence says that Annie the daughter of Solomon Dunkelberger & his wife Catharine Rothermel married a Ruff called "Daddy" Ruff & she died here in Phila abt 7 yrs ago aged 93 or 94 yrs & is buried in Fernwood Cemetery just a short distance from here & wd have a marker & had children. 1. William married & has a delicatessen store at 5th & Green Sts. No issue. 2. Samuel unmarried did live in Phila 3. Ida, unmarried, did live in Phila 4. Anna, married Joe Bloom. He dead & she lives in Phila & has 9 children & her sister Ida lives with one of them. Florence's present husband is not related to her father's family. He is yard master on the PRR Co. Leaving 12:05 Am July 10, 1926 See Book 7 p 507 V16 Page 538 & V16 Page 539 [descendant chart] Abraham Rothermel married Mary Hunter. He was a first cousin of John Rothermel, the father of P.F. Rothermel the artist. Both are buried in Mahanoy graveyard, Hunters Sta. They had 7 sons & 4 daughters. he was born June 1, 1780 & died Sept 18, 1843 aged 63 yrs 3 mos 17 days. She was born Oct 17, 1784 & died July 10, 1877 aged 92 yrs 8 mos 23 days. [children] Samuel Hunter Rothermel, B Mch 11, 1809 ob Feby 28, 1897 married Louise McDowell. These are Mrs McDowell's parents. I have record. William Rothermel, b Aug 14, 1807 ob Nov 18, 1853. He died in Mahanoy Tp married Judith Herb daughter of Daniel Herb & the second of his five wives. He married his 5th when 87 & died 2 mos later. had 12 children. The oldest born at Mahantango Tp, the next two at Pottsville, Pa & the others on the farm in Mahanoy Tp Northumberland Co. See pages 540 & 541. Joel Rothermel, ob married Caroline Nice. Died here in Phila Nice Rothermel Curtis Rothermel, married. Lives in West Phila Clara Rothermel, ob when a young girl 50 yrs ago unmarried. Maria Rothermel, ob married Stephen Taenhart. Lived in Shamokin, Pa. Had 3 or 4 children. Kate Taenhart, married Samuel Taenhart Frank Taenhart, ob married & had a lot of children. Daniel Rothermel, ob, married Charlotta ____. He died here in Phila. Had several children. Edward Rothermel, is in Kirkbrides, single Catharine Rothermel, married 1 Saml Lamborn. Married 2 Fred Cope. No issue. Live in Oak Lane, Melrose Ave. She is the one to see. He is very wealthy. Gertrude Rothermel, ob married Fred Cope who married her sister after she died. Florence Lamborn, married Gertrude Lamborn, married Alice Lamborn, married All taken & raised by their Aunt Catharine after their mother died. Sarah Rothermel, ob married John Rothermel, living. Anna Rothermel [dau of of Abraham] b July 26, 1812 ob. Married Samuel Wagner. Went to Illinois to Ogle Co. Joel Wagner, killed in Civil War, unmarried. Anna Wagner Rebecca Wagner Mary Wagner Catharine Rothermel, B Jany 14, 1806 ob Sept 27, 1843 married Solomon Dunkelberger b Sept 13, 1798 & died May 30, 1872. Got this in Calif Dec 1922 See page 542. Dunkelberger, B May 4, 1832 ob Dec 5, 1904 Lewis Rothermel, ob married Mary George died in Phila. No issue. Susan Rothermel, B Nov 18, 1814 ob Dec 29, 1893 married John D. Hensyl Both died on the farm 2 miles below Treverton, Pa. Had abt 10 children. Thinks I got it in 1923. NO. See book 11 p 85 93. Theodore Rothermel (twin) ob Florence Rothermel, married Robert Halfpenny & live at Lewisburg, Pa. Has issue. Lewis Rothermel, married. He lives in Lewisburg, Pa Isaac Rothermel, was the baby. [children] Rebecca Rothermel, B Nov ob Nov married Galen Smith. He died at Red Cross & she died later at Sunbury. She was in her 86th yr & is buried at Red Cross. Had 3 children born in Mahanoy Tp. Howard Smith, ob aged 5 yrs Sarah Smith, ob aged abt 41 unmarried Bertha Smith, B Feby 25, 1873 single. Lives alone in Sunbury, Pa & probably has her grandfather's bible. Samuel H. Rothermel, B Sept 4, 1833 ob Jany 29, 1902 married Feby 22, 1859 Hannah Maurer daughter of Felix Maurer & wife Polly Geist. He died at 658 N 11th St Phila, Pa. This is Mrs Batdorf's parents from whom I got record see book 7 page 506. Maria Rothermel, B June 25, 1835? ob. married Mathias Bohner Both died at Treverton, Pa & buried there. Had 12 children. William Bohner, married Reuben Bohner, married Lewis Bohner, married Sallie Bohner, married Pickering ob Samuel Bohner, married Catharine Bohner, married Van Gilda lives in Sunbury Pa & can give family record. Jane Bohner, married Lillian Bohner, married Agnes Bohner, married Julia Bohner, married Edward Bohner, married John Bohner, married Sarah Rothermel, [dau of William & Judith Rothermel] B Feby 6, ob Oct 9, 1908 married Daniel Graeff ob. Both died in Lebanon Pa & buried there. No issue. She was his 2d wife. Catharine Rothermel, ob married James Raker ob. Both died at Raker P.O. & had 3 children. She was known as "Kitty" William Rothermel Raker, B Mch 18, 1865 ob Dec 4, 1922 never married. Mary Raker, married John Yordy a janitor. No issue. Lives in Sunbury, Pa see her No 341 Vine st Lewis R.
