Chris Smith, of Roxbury, a member of the Mountain Valley High School Wrestling Team, who has won the 152-pound weight class at the Western Maine Class B Wrestling Championship. We extend our congratulations to Chris on this achievement; (HLS 547)

J. Donald MacWilliams, of Portland, author, activist and pioneer of Maine Television Broadcasting. Born at "Gorham's Corner," the Irish heart of old Portland, he served in the 18th weather squadron in the European Theatre in World War II and in the post-war period graduated from the WEEI School of Radio Broadcasting in Boston. In 1953, he began a 40-year television sportscasting career on WCSH-TV, one of Maine's first television stations. A founder and inductee of the Maine Sports Hall of Fame, he was honored as Maine Sportscaster of the Year and the Irish-American Club Man of the Year in 2000. He proudly served on the city council for 18 years and authored 2 books and innumerable articles about his beloved State of Maine and hometown of Portland, Longfellow's city "that is seated by the sea"; (IN MEMORIAM) (HLS 548)

Michael Katz, of Casco, Campus Director of Camp Sunshine in Casco, for his outstanding job in coordinating the hundreds of people who volunteer their time at the camp. Michael's organization and effectiveness enable him to provide a rewarding experience for volunteers, who in turn provide a relaxing, therapeutic summer camp environment for families suffering from the effects of critical illness in their homes. Children and their families from all around the country attend sponsored weeks filled with activities staffed by professionals, most of whom are volunteers. Since its inception, Camp Sunshine has been a haven for more than 3,400 families from many cultural backgrounds. G. Thomas Cox, of Caribou, on the occasion of his retirement after 20 years of dedicated service with the Department of Human Services. Mr. Cox worked for the Division of Support Enforcement, first as an agent then as the supervisor. Under his leadership, Aroostook County's support collections have grown immensely. Erin Elizabeth Buck, of Caribou, winner of the North America Country Music Association International Competition for 2003 held at the Louise Mandrel Theater in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. She is the daughter of Steve and Pamela Buck. She is 11 years old and a 5th grader at the Caribou Middle School. She won 1st place as Female Entertainer New Country, 1st place as New Country Duo and 4th place as New Country Female Vocalist. Jeff Robertson, of Caribou, who is the recipient of a VITA Wireless Samaritan Award, presented by U.S. Cellular and the Cellular Telecommunications and Internet Association's Wireless Foundation. Jeff, who was at the right place at the right time, played a significant role in saving the life of 15-year old Steven Crowley, who was struck by lightning. VITA, the Latin word for "life," was chosen to represent the award, which highlights the noteworthy efforts of Americans who by their actions help in times of need and is given to individuals who exemplify the importance of putting safety first. Harold L. Randall, of Lebanon, on his retirement as town selectman. Harold's dedication and years of service to the Town of Lebanon and its people are notable. the memory of Trooper Charles C. Black, of York, and Constable Maurice D. Beane, of Passadumkeag, and all other law enforcement officials who have given their lives in the line of duty. Philip C. Hastings, of Readfield, beloved husband, father and grandfather. Phil worked for the Public Utilities Commission as the Director of the Electric Efficiency Program and in that capacity became a leader, teacher and facilitator. He was a professional engineer. Phil was a hiker, a camper, a sailor and an avid skier who was active in ski patrol training. He was a member of the Maine National Guard for 25 years. He was tireless in his efforts to help all of his family. Phil was a thoughtful, respected, intelligent gentleman with a delightful sense of humor. Muriel Havenstein, of Nobleboro, a lively fixture in the Maine jazz scene who celebrated her 80th birthday with fellow jazz musicians from near and far. She still talks with a Bronx accent, still plays up a storm, still sits on a pillow if the bench is too low and plays for all occasions. Muriel has played the piano since she was 9, though at the age of 14 her piano teacher stepped down from the job because Muriel kept adding notes to Mozart. With her family's permission, she left school and at 16 became the youngest member of the Musicians Union in New York City. During the war years, Muriel played and toured with the all-woman swing band,"Estelle and her Brunettes." After taking time out to raise a family, she relocated to mid-coast Maine and got back to her music. At Spinnaker's Restaurant in Rockport, she found herself playing for an appreciative Dizzy Gillespie, whose autograph she still cherishes. Muriel continues to play a variety of gigs, enjoying all. Donald Mangarelli, of Rumford, beloved husband of Louise Collette, and a member of the Armed Forces who retired in 1984 with the rank of Chief Warrant Officer III. Mr. Mangarelli, a veteran of the Vietnam War, was a Physician's Assistant and served as an instructor and trainer while stationed at Ft. Sam Houston in Texas. Upon his retirement from the military, he worked at a local clinic and at the Maine Veterans Hospital, where he was instrumental in starting the Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Unit. Mr. Mangarelli was an active member of the St. Athanasius St. John Church, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, the American Legion and the VFW. He will be greatly missed by his loving family and many friends; (IN MEMORIAM) (HLS 565)

John Emerson, of Lewiston, who has been named Citizen of the Year by the Auburn Business Association. Mr. Emerson, the president of Emerson Chevrolet-Buick-Pontiac in Auburn, is a chief fundraiser for the St. Dominic Regional High School's current capital campaign and has earned the gratitude of people throughout his community. In addition to the car business, he serves on the board of the Sisters of Charity Health Systems, St. Dominic Regional High School and the Central Maine Technical College's Board of Auto Technologies. David Williamson, of Woolwich, on the occasion of his retirement as assistant superintendent for School Union 44 for 12 years. Mr. Williamson has been in the field of education for 39 years. Robert E. Graff, of South Portland, a devoted husband and father who was generous and unconditional in his love for his family. As a student at Portland High School, he excelled at football, basketball and baseball. At Bowdoin College and under the coaching of Danny McFadden, Mr. Graff led the Polar Bears to 3 consecutive Maine Series titles. For nearly 50 years, he held the record for the best single season batting average for the Bowdoin College baseball team, where in his senior year, he was the recipient of the distinguished Andrew Allison Haldane Cup. After serving in the military, he had a tryout with the Brooklyn Dodgers, where he competed against future Hall of Famer Roy Campanella. In 1990, he became a member of the Maine Baseball Hall of Fame, and in 2002, he was the first recipient of the Bob Ganley Award. He taught at Livermore Falls High School and at Portland High School. He was known by his peers, players and students as a first-class sportsman and gentleman who inspired countless students as a longtime football coach and math teacher. In addition to his love of sports, Mr. Graff also enjoyed gardening and spending time in the outdoors, camping and hiking at Isle au Haut with family and friends. He was a communicant at Holy Cross Church. He will be missed by his family, friends, peers and students; (IN MEMORIAM) (HLS 570)

Kenneth R. Lord, longtime resident of Patten. He was a veteran of World War II and was in the Battle of Anzio. He honorably served with the 101st Armored Infantry in Africa and Italy. He received 4 Purple Hearts with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters and a Bronze Star. Ken was a merchant on Main Street in Patten for 50 years. He employed and inspired many young people over the years and was known for his service to the community. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him; (IN MEMORIAM) (HLS 574)

Mamie M. King, of Millinocket, beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, who worked extremely hard all her life and retired at age 84 as Great Northern Paper Company's oldest employee. Her family was her greatest joy and she took great pride in all their accomplishments, great and small. Mrs. King was a great cook and was always ready to set an extra place at the table. the founders of the Bowdoinham Plant Sale: Leslie Anderson, Billie Oakes, Betsy Steen, Sally (Kelly) Clemens, Audrey Johnson and Gayle Cogan and their family members who were always encouraged to help out. The Bowdoinham plant sale is the oldest continuing plant sale in the State. It was started 30 years ago to raise money for the library building, and brought in $131.00. Since that first sale, the plant sale has raised up to $9,756 at one sale. Over the years, the sale has raised over $139,000 to support the town library. We extend our appreciation to these ladies, their families and the hundreds of people of Bowdoinham for their dedication and commitment to the citizens of the town and the State; (HLS 576)

Mike Burnham, of Winthrop, who is the recipient of the Bob Leahy Athletic Director of the Year award. Since Mr. Burnham took over as athletic director, Monmouth has built a new high school and jumped from Class D to Class C. He has overseen the addition of several new sports,including JV soccer, cross country running and skiing, tennis , golf, wrestling, track and hockey. the Cape Elizabeth High School Girls Swim Team, upon winning the State Class A Swim Championship for the 2nd consecutive year. The team's spectacular season, led by Coach of the Year Kerry Kertes and his assistant Ben Raymond, included winning its 3rd consecutive conference championship, setting 3 new state records, receiving top 10 national swimming ranking and qualifying for the national academic GPA Bronze level award. Two members of the team, Taylor McFarlane and Emily Caras, contributed greatly towards the team's success this year, each winning 2 individual events at the state meet and both setting records throughout the season. Cindy Hazelton, of Buxton, recipient of the 2003 William V. Haskell Distinguished Professional Award, which is given annually by the Maine Recreation and Parks Association. Ms Hazelton is worthy of this award for her service as Gorham's Recreation Department Director. In this role, she has exhibited a longtime commitment to park and recreation initiatives and to citizens of all ages in the town. the Baxter Memorial Library's Expansion Project Steering Committee in Gorham, who have recently completed an expansion of the Town of Gorham's library facility. The library was built in 1908 and was given as a gift to the town by the Honorable James Phinney Baxter, a former Mayor of Portland. The library has served as a landmark of the town's past and is a primary component of the community. After many years of hard work and great effort, these individuals have achieved their goal of improving the library and fulfilling its mission by enhancing the library's role as a center of cultural and educational enrichment. The committee's endeavors will serve as a treasure to the citizens of Gorham and the community at large for many years to come; (HLS 584)

Anthony P. "Tony" Notis, of South Portland, beloved husband of Vasso Notis and the owner of Bridgeway Restaurant for more than 47 years. He immigrated to America from Politsani, Greece, after World War II. Always a proud American who cherished the freedoms of his adopted country, he also remained close to his Greek roots. Mr. Notis was an active participant in his church and community. He was a past president of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, a founding member of AHEPA and a past president of the local Politsani Society. Mr. Notis was also actively involved in numerous fraternal and service organizations, including the Masons, the Kora Temple Shrine, the Elks Club, the Kiwanis Club and the Eagles Club of South Portland. He was a very active member of the South Portland Lions Club and served as the chair for the Lions Club Camp Sunshine fundraisers. Due to his efforts, Governor King proclaimed April 1996 Camp Sunshine month. He enjoyed music, especially jazz, and made the Bridgeway Restaurant weekly "jazz jams" a 30-year tradition that continues on with his spirit. The life of Tony Notis was full and rewarding and will be long remembered by all who knew him; (IN MEMORIAM) (HLS 585)

Walter Anthony Borkowski, of South Berwick, a devoted husband, father and grandfather who loved his family. He taught at Traip Academy, where he also coached basketball - taking several teams to the state finals - and was assistant football coach. He was a Kittery Point Congregational Church trustee, member of the Kittery Point Boy Scouts Committee and trustee and secretary of the Rice Public Library Board. In 1967 he began teaching and coaching at Exeter Area High School. He served as assistant principal from 1976 to 1978 and as principal until he retired from the school in 1994. He was director of the New Hampshire Academic Decathlon program, mentored school exchanges with Okinawa, Japan; Ploermel, France; High Wycombe, England and negotiated the selection of Exeter as one of the 25 schools chosen for the U.S.S.R.-U.S.A. School Exchange Program. He was an avid sports enthusiast and fisherman. He will be missed by his family and friends; (IN MEMORIAM) (HLS 586)

the Cape Elizabeth Boys Ice Hockey Team, upon winning the State Class B Ice Hockey Championship. The team finished the season with a record of 19-3 and was led by 8 seniors, who provided leadership, dedication and a strong work ethic. Team member Jeff Croteau was named to the 3rd team all-league, and Dan Rautenberg, Mike Rautenberg, Luke Holden and goaltender Tom Rowe were named to the 1st team all-league. The sportsmanship displayed by its members made the Cape Elizabeth hockey team a great representative of its school and community and a deserving champion. Richard B. Paige, of Pittston, beloved husband of Elisabeth Jenney. Mr. Paige served as a medical technician in the United States Army from 1952 to 1953. He was president of Brunswick Savings Institution and president, chair of the board and chief executive officer of Coastal Savings Bank. After he retired, he raised sheep in Pittston for 12 years. He also served in the Chamber of Commerce of the Bath-Brunswick Region, various Rotary clubs and the Navy League. He provided strong administrative and voluntary skills in many organizations: as a trustee of the Maine Audubon Society, as a trustee and a treasurer of the Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences, as a director of the New England Solar Energy Commission, as a director of United Way and as a director of Bowdoin College Energy Committee. He also served as chair of the Savings Banks Association of Maine and the Pittston Planning Board and Budget Committee. His favorite involvement, however, was with the Morris Farm Trust, where he was an active trustee and supporter. He will be missed by his family, friends and associates; (IN MEMORIAM) (HLS 588)

Evan Richards, of Presque Isle, who has been named a United States National Award Winner in Mathematics by the United States Achievement Academy. Toni Orestis, of Lewiston, on the occasion of her retirement after many years of service to the citizens of the Androscoggin County area. For 65 years, she worked 7 days a week and often 12-hour days as the owner and operator of Marois Restaurant in Lewiston, making it one of the greatest restaurants in the State. She trained generations of young people in the skills of customer service and provided area citizens with a meeting area. We send our appreciation to Ms. Orestis for her years of dedication, commitment and loyalty to area citizens and extend to her our best wishes on her retirement; (HLS 593)

Andre Lacasse, of Augusta, who is the recipient of the Club Calumet's Medaille d'Honneur. Andre's involvement with the club includes serving as Chair of the Finance Committee, Festival de la Bastille finance committee, Chairman of Bankers' Night for several years and Director and President of the Educational Foundation, as well as installing officer and master of ceremonies for numerous years. He has also been active within the Augusta community, serving as treasurer of the Heart of Augusta Team, treasurer of the Bread of Life Kitchen and Shelter and member and past president of St. Mary's Parish Council.
