Bonanza Steakhouse Restaurant, in Sanford, which is celebrating 25 years in business. The restaurant has been serving people at the same Main Street address since February 17, 1984, and has been owned and operated by Geoff Titherington since October 1, 1985. Patrick Thibodeau, of Cumberland, on his contributions to the Greely High School Boys' Basketball Team. Patrick, a senior at Greely High School who has Down's Syndrome, serves as the basketball team manager and occasionally practices with the team. He had the opportunity to play in his first game which was the final home game of the season. Patrick was part of the starting line-up and shot 2 3-point baskets, with the last one coming at the final buzzer. This was broadcast locally and nationally, with a featured spot on NBC's Today Show. We extend our congratulations to Patrick on his outstanding achievement and his wonderful representation of team spirit; (HLS 159)

Nicholas Kingsbury, of Bethel, a member of Boy Scout Troop No. 565 and Crew 101, who has attained the high rank and distinction of Eagle Scout. This is the highest award in Boy Scouting and is given for excellence in skills development, leadership, personal growth and community service. Nicholas, a junior at Telstar High School in Bethel, earned a total of 51 merit badges and served his troop and crew in a variety of leadership roles. For his community service project, he built a picnic shelter at Angevine Park to provide additional shade at the waterfront. We extend our congratulations to him on this achievement; (HLS 160)

Harry C. Briggs II, of Millinocket. Mr. Briggs grew up in northern Maine and worked for the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad as a conductor for 35 years. He was an avid outdoorsman and a devoted father and grandfather. Mr. Briggs was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association, the United Transportation Union, and the Fin and Feather Club of Millinocket. F. Harvey Bowley, Jr., of Millinocket. Mr. Bowley attended local schools and graduated from Beal College in Bangor in 1967. He then served in the United States Navy before going to work for Maine Information Systems in Bangor. Mr. Bowley left that company for Great Northern Paper Company in Millinocket where he worked for over 30 years. He was very involved with his community as an active member and past master of Nollesemic Lodge No. 205, AF and AM, Millinocket and Mount Katahdin Chapter R.A.D. No. 60. Mr. Bowley will be sadly missed by his wife of 33 years, Karen, his family, his friends and his community; (IN MEMORIAM) (HLS 162)

Everett Vining, of Farmington. As a young man, Mr. Vining graduated from Wentworth Institute in Massachusetts with plans to become a building contractor. He was a gifted builder and constructed hundreds of homes in the Farmington area before he decided to move in other directions. He started a John Deere business in West Farmington and K&E Motors with his son, Kevin, who took over the business. Mr. Vining then went on to develop his successful excavation business, E.L. Vining and Son, Inc. Throughout his life, Mr. Vining was very involved with his community. He was a veteran, an active member of Trinity United Church, a Mason, a Shriner and a former selectman of the Town. Mr. Vining will be sadly missed and long remembered by his family, his friends and his community; (IN MEMORIAM) (HLS 163)

Alton R. Lane, of Millinocket. Mr. Lane served his country in the United States Navy from 1946 to 1948. He was an avid outdoorsman and a talented woodworker and carpenter. Mr. Lane will be sadly missed by his family and friends; (IN MEMORIAM) (HLS 164)

Edna Bragg, longtime resident of Hampden, on the occasion of her 104th Birthday, April 1, 2009. Mrs. Bragg has the honor of being the Town of Hampden's oldest citizen. Student Ryan Gao and Teacher Jorma Kurry of Falmouth High School, who have received a 2009 Siemens Award for Advanced Placement. The College Board and the Siemens Foundation are celebrating 11 years of this prestigious award. Each year, the foundation recognizes students, teachers and high schools in each of the 50 states for excellence in Advanced Placement in math and science. The award is given to the student earning the highest scores on 8 different Advanced Placement tests and the teachers are recognized for their exemplary teaching and dedication to students and the AP program. The high school is selected in recognition of its commitment to students and leadership in AP participation and performance. This year Ryan Gao, Jorma Kurry and Falmouth High School have been chosen as the winners for the State of Maine. These talented individuals will create the solutions we need for a better world and this exceptional high school will continue to foster an environment where these young people can excel. Rowena Reed, of Strong, on the occasion of her 90th birthday. Mrs. Reed was born April 9, 1919 in Phillips, Maine and has lived in the Freeman-Strong area all of her life. She was married to Albert Reed for 63 years and has 3 children, 14 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-

Pamela Cyr, of Fort Kent, who was voted the 2009 Aroostook Idol. Ms. Cyr competed against 8 other contestants in 4 Aroostook Idol shows to raise money for the United Way. The net proceeds from the shows will be approximately $30,000 which goes toward supporting numerous agencies throughout Aroostook County that receive funding from the United Way. We congratulate Ms. Cyr on her accomplishment and we commend her for supporting the United Way of Aroostook County; (HLS 171)

Don Guimond, of Fort Kent, recipient of the 2009 Distinguished Service Award from the University of Maine at Fort Kent. Mr. Guimond and his siblings are the fourth generation to operate the Guimond Farms. He graduated from Husson College with a bachelor's degree in business administration and from Norwich University in Vermont with a master's degree in business administration. After graduating from college, Mr. Guimond returned to Fort Kent and started a business career with the Fort Kent Federal Credit Union, now the Acadia Federal Credit Union. He worked for the Town of Fort Kent as Planning and Economic Development coordinator and is the Town Manager. He has served on countless boards, committees and organizations with his leadership skills. He received the Greater Fort Kent Area Chamber of Commerce Dirigo Award in 2002 and the Citizenship Award in 2004 and was nominated for the Small Business Administration Phoenix Award. Mr. Guimond is receiving the Distinguished Service Award for his many leadership contributions and great support to the University of Maine at Fort Kent and for his outstanding service to the Town of Fort Kent, especially his leadership during and after the Flood of 2008. Joel W. Stevens, of Kennebunk. Mr. Stevens began his banking career in 1970 at the Depositors Trust Co. in Augusta, where he eventually became executive vice president and senior lending officer. He left Maine to work in the banking business in New Hampshire for a while but returned in 1993 and moved to Kennebunk. There he joined Kennebunk Savings Bank as president and CEO and led the creation of a new corporate culture which emphasized employee welfare, customer satisfaction and community service. He was the prime architect of the bank's Community Investment Program which provides 10 percent of the bank's yearly earnings to area nonprofit and charitable organizations. Since the program's inception, the bank has contributed more than $6 million within York County. As the creator of this program, Mr. Stevens was viewed by his colleagues as a model of corporate social responsibility. He also contributed to the community by participating in numerous organizations, such as the Northern York County YMCA, the Portland Concert Association, the Ogunquit Playhouse Foundation and the United Way of York County, which presented him with the 2006 Elise Kitteridge Award. Mr. Stevens was a direct descendant of John Calvin Stevens, a renowned Maine architect and artist, and a cousin of the Honorable Tom Allen. He will be greatly missed and long remembered by his family, his friends, his colleagues and the York County community; (IN MEMORIAM) (HLS 173)

Jobs for Maine's Graduates, a private, nonprofit organization to help high school seniors reconnect to school and successfully graduate and transition into the workforce, was named the "Best of the Best" of the 30 states currently operating a Jobs for America's Graduates program. For 14 consecutive years, Jobs for Maine's Graduates has been distinguished as the best program of its kind in the nation. The program works with 3,600 Maine students helping them to overcome barriers to education and to reach their potential. It boasts a 95% student retention rate and a 96% graduation rate, and more significantly, according to a recent Maine Department of Labor report, the program's students are earning 14% more money and continuing their postsecondary education at rates higher than their peers. We acknowledge Jobs for Maine's Graduates as a remarkable education asset to Maine schools and students and a valuable partner to Maine's workforce development efforts. Todd Ladd, of Farmington, who has been named Logger of the Year by the Franklin County Soil and Water Conservation District. Mr. Ladd is a master certified logger. He is being recognized for his logging practices which include using portable panels for temporary bridging, using hay and mulch for stabilization and filtration, using limbs and tops in soft areas, making planned trails laid out on foot, and matching the season of harvest to the ground conditions. We extend our congratulations to Mr. Ladd on receiving this recognition; (HLS 175)

Jane White-Kilcollins, of Fort Fairfield, on being named Maine's 2009 Elementary National Distinguished Principal of the

Year by the Maine Principals' Association. Ms. White-Kilcollins is the principal at Hilltop Elementary School in Caribou. She received this award in acknowledgement of her effective leadership, commitment to academic excellence, high expectations and standards, ability to create a culture which supports learning, contributions to her profession and community service. She will be recognized at the Maine Principals' Association's Spring Conference in April and by the National Association of Elementary School Principals in Washington, D.C. in the fall. Patrick Hartnett, of Hebron, who has been named Maine's 2009 High School Principal of the Year by the Maine Principals' Association. Mr. Hartnett is the principal at Leavitt Area High School and has been recognized by Maine School Administrative District No. 52 superintendent Darlene Burdin as having "an unwavering commitment to teaching, learning and increased student achievement." In April, Mr. Hartnett will be recognized at the Maine Principals' Spring Conference and will attend the Principals' Institute in October. Mr. Harnett has also received the Veterans of Foreign Wars Citizenship Educator of the year award. We extend our congratulations to Mr. Hartnett for receiving this award; (HLS 178)

Norm Gould, of Wilton, for his service to the Town of Wilton for more than 40 years on the Board of Selectmen. Mr. Gould also served as the town assessor and on the Planning Board, the Finance Committee Board of Assessment Review and appeals board. Prior to becoming a selectman, Mr. Gould served in the United States Army and as a fire inspector for International Paper. He currently serves as a deacon and Sunday school teacher at the East Dixfield Baptist Church. We extend our appreciation to Mr. Gould for his commitment to the Town of Wilton; (HLS 180)

the Reverend Thomas and Mrs. Sandra (Nammarah) Caton, of Phillips, on the occasion of their 50th Wedding Anniversary. They were married on February 14, 1959, in Milton, Massachusetts. Rev. Caton is now retired after 40 years in the ministry. Mrs. Caton is an artisan and the owner of Native Maine Driftwood. They have 4 daughters and 6 grandchildren. Olivia Watson, of Topsham, on her being named Maine's 2009 Top Middle School Youth Volunteer by The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards, a nationwide program honoring young people for outstanding acts of volunteering. Olivia, a 7th-grader at Mt. Ararat Middle School in Topsham, takes care of 10 young children on Friday afternoons as a volunteer at the Topsham day care, Building Blocks. As a state honoree, she will travel to Washington, D.C. in May where she will join other honorees in a national competition. James Brewer, of Scarborough, on his receiving a 65-year Service Medal from the Masons. Mr. Brewer is a veteran of the United States Armed Forces and a former captain with the Merchant Marines. He is the longest serving Mason of Governor William King Lodge #219 of the Ancient Free and Accepted Masons in Scarborough. He was raised to the 3rd Degree and became a Master Mason in 1943. John T. Patches, of Bangor, who is the recipient of the Vincent A. Hartgen Award presented by the University of Maine. The award honors individuals who have distinguished themselves in the community of the arts at the University of Maine. Raag's Music Shop, of Madawaska, on its being named the 2009 Business of the Year by the Greater Madawaska Chamber of Commerce for its contributions to the community. Raag's Music Shop is instrumental in the continued success of Rock the Valley, a nonprofit organization that features live music provided by major acts from around the country. It also contributes to local food pantries and breast cancer awareness and helps various local fund-raisers by providing musical instruments as prizes for raffles. Rayle Ainsworth and Sarah Ulman, of Fort Fairfield, upon being named Citizens of the Year by the Fort Fairfield Chamber of Commerce for their coordinated efforts in cochairing the Fort Fairfield Sesquicentennial Committee. Both Ms. Ainsworth and Ms. Ulman have long-standing ties to this community and effectively planned events throughout 2008 in celebration of the Town of Fort Fairfield's successful 150th anniversary. the Town of Guilford which has demonstrated extensive efforts to promote its natural resources and to create green economic opportunities, beautification and recreation. Through the consistent and dedicated efforts of the Economic Development Board and the town government, lilac trees of many varieties have been planted on town-owned sites, revitalizing and beautifying the community. The lilacs attract a large population of native Black Capped Chickadees and Guilford now calls itself "The Lilac and Chickadee Capital of Maine." We acknowledge the efforts of the Town of Guilford in improving and maintaining its beauty; (HLS 189)

Alex Cottrell, of Winthrop, who has been named the Kennebec Journal Boys Nordic Skier of the Year. Alex, a member of the Winthrop High School Boys Nordic Ski Team, finished a strong season by winning the freestyle and classical races at the Mountain Valley Conference championship meet, as well as finishing 3rd in the classical at the state meet. The team's coach, Ed Van Tassel, noted that throughout the season Alex remained focused on his individual goals as well as the goals of the team. That effort helped the Ramblers to complete an impressive season. We extend our congratulations to Alex on this tremendous achievement and wish him continued success; (HLS 190)

Emily Harriman, of Readfield, who has been named the Kennebec Journal Girls Nordic Skier of the Year. Emily, a

member of the Maranacook High School Girls Nordic Ski Team, finished 2nd in the classical race and 4th in the freestyle to help the team win the Class B State Title. Throughout the season, Emily continually put the team ahead of herself in order to help the Black Bears reach their goal of a state championship victory. She is described by her coach, Steve DeAngelis, as not only a top-notch skier but a quality person. We extend our congratulations to Emily on this tremendous achievement and wish her continued success; (HLS 191)

Irma K. Bowles, of Livermore, a longtime prominent member of her community. Mrs. Bowles was considered by many to be

the town matriarch, was an officer of many organizations, including past president of the Livermore Falls Women's Club, and district president of the Maine Federation of Women's Council, and served as a 4-H leader, a Girl Scout leader and a 50-year member of the Norland Grange. Mrs. Bowles was the registrar of voters for the Town of Livermore, and, at the age of 92, received the state Lorraine M. Fleury Award which honors a person who exemplifies fairness, experience, knowledge and service. Mrs. Bowles will be greatly missed and long remembered by her loving family and her many neighbors and friends; (IN MEMORIAM) (HLS 192)

Bernard Davis, of Farmington, who has been a member of the Farmington Lions Club for 50 years. We extend our congratulations and best wishes to him on this anniversary; (HLS 193)

Admiral Robert Edwin Peary, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of his successful journey to the top of the North Pole. Admiral Peary's family was originally from Maine. A graduate of Portland High School, he subsequently graduated from Bowdoin College and worked as a civil engineer. He was also employed as a surveyor for the Town of Fryeburg. In 1881, he purchased Eagle Island and made it his summer residence, which is now owned by the State and is a unique state historic site, receiving 6,000 visitors by boat each year. On April 6, 1909, after repeated efforts and great hardship, Admiral Peary and his crew, which consisted of Matthew Henson and 4 Inuit men, determined that they had reached 90 degrees latitude north, the North Pole. They raised an American flag, made scientific observations and remained at the North Pole for about 30 hours. Admiral Peary died on February 20, 1920 and was buried with full honors in Arlington National Cemetery, where a large globe monument attests to his many achievements. We are proud to acknowledge Admiral Peary as a native of Maine; (HLS 194)

Evan R. Gillingham, of Standish, a 5th-grade student at the George E. Jack Elementary School, who received a Community Helper/Good Citizen award for organizing friends to help clean up trash around their schoolyard. He also won first place for the 5th grade in the SAD 6 Writing contest, a contest he has entered every year since kindergarten. Evan is very active at his school and has entered math meets, attends band and performs exceptionally well in all academic areas, studying in the Gifted and Talented program for Language Arts and Science. Dorothy M. Pound, 97, of Millinocket. In her younger years, Mrs. Pound was active in her community as a member of the Plus and Minus Club and the VFW Women's Auxiliary. She was a communicant of St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church in Millinocket. Mrs. Pound had one son, 7 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
