Judith Wills, of New Portland, who is the recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Emergency Medical Services Board for her extensive involvement with Emergency Medical Services in Maine, and for consistently performing above and beyond expectations. Ms. Wills began her EMS career in 1981 for Sugarloaf Rescue and became one of the original members of the Tri-County EMS CISD team, where she served for several years as a team coordinator, helped develop local response teams and continues to be an active member. Kelly Vaillancourt, of Van Buren, who has been crowned Miss Van Buren 2009. David Plowman, of Hampden, owner of PDQ Door Company, Inc., who has been named Hampden Business Association's 2009 Business Person of the Year. The award honors a Hampden business person who has made a significant contribution to his or her community and to the region. Mr. Plowman and his wife Debra started PDQ Door Company in 1994 in Bangor and moved to Hampden 4 years later; they now have 5 locations throughout the State. Mr. Plowman was a member of the Hampden town council and is currently a member of the Penobscot County Conservation Association, the Hampden Rifle and Pistol Club and the National Rifle Association. Mr. Plowman and PDQ Door Company, Inc. continue to support community organizations with both man hours and financial contributions. Hal Watson, of Rumford, former wrestling coach of Dirigo High School, on his induction into the Maine Amateur Wrestling Hall of Fame. Mr. Watson, a retired history teacher, started the Cougar wrestling program from scratch more than 3 decades ago with little support and few guarantees. He built the program up by learning and teaching the basics and brought out the best in his student-athletes. Through the years they won state championships and earned respect throughout the region. Shannon Jacobson, of Limington, who has won a prestigious Horatio Alger National Scholarship. This program is the only major scholarship effort that specifically assists high school students who have faced and overcome great obstacles in their young lives. Shannon is a senior at Bonny Eagle High School and is the editor of the student newspaper. She is the only student from Maine who was chosen for this honor. In January, she was a member of a group of Bonny Eagle students who traveled to Washington, D.C. to cover the Presidential Inauguration for the Bonny Eagle Times and in March, she will return to Washington, D.C. to participate in the National Scholars Conference. We extend our congratulations to Shannon on her winning this scholarship and we commend her for all of her hard work and determination; (HLS 324)

Heather Muzzy, of Portland, who has earned the distinction of being named the Valedictorian of the 2009 graduating class of Deering High School. Heather was selected to receive the Harvard Book Award in recognition of her academic ability, positive character and service to the community. She plays first base for the girls' softball team, which is a perennial contender for the State Class A title. Heather's good sportsmanship both on and off of the field and her amazing academic achievements have garnered her recognition as a Southern Maine Athletic Association All-Academic All-Star. Natalie Mitchell, of Portland, who has earned the distinction of being named the Salutatorian of the 2009 graduating class of Deering High School. Natalie is the captain of three athletic teams, serves as Vice President of the school's National Honor Society, is a Headline Writer for the school's award-winning newspaper, Ramblings, and plays violin in the orchestra. She is a volunteer within the school community and the community at large. Natalie was the recipient of the St. Michael's Book Award, an award recognizing students who have taken on leadership roles within community service endeavors. Marjorie Churchill, of South Portland, on the celebration of her 100th birthday, May 29, 2009. Mrs. Churchill worked for the American Red Cross of Southern Maine, driving people to medical appointments. When she was younger, she enjoyed refinishing furniture, gardening, cooking, painting, knitting and crocheting. She now enjoys car rides to places like Bug Light, Camp Ellis, Fort Williams and Kettle Cove. She was born on Long Island, and has lived in her South Portland home for more than 60 years. She loves having her cat Ingia sit and sleep on her lap. We extend our congratulations and best wishes to Mrs. Churchill on this very special occasion; (HLS 327)

Bowdoin Rowing, the club rowing team of Bowdoin College, on winning medals in all six events for fours racing in the 2009 New England Rowing Championships. The New England Rowing Championships is a championship regatta for qualifying colleges throughout New England. Bowdoin College's team, the Polar Bears, received one gold medal, two silver medals and three bronze medals, which earned the highest points tally among fours schools in the competition. We extend our congratulations to the members of the team on this achievement and send them our best wishes; (HLS 328)

the 250th anniversary of the founding of Fort Pownall, the first permanent European settlement on the banks of the Penobscot River. Named after Governor Thomas Pownall, the fort is located at the present-day Fort Point and is part of the Town of Stockton Springs. In 1759, Massachusetts Governor Thomas Pownall sought to block the mouths of Maine's key rivers to keep the French and Indians well inland. Fort Pownall was chosen for its location, as it looks down the eastern channel of the Penobscot Bay with a fine view of the sea. Today, all the towns and villages from Bucksport to Owl's Head can be distinctly seen. Governor Pownall, with the assistance of 400 men, built the fort. While the fort never fired a shot in anger, its protective presence encouraged Anglo-American settlement in the Penobscot region. In 1775, British forces seized the fort's cannons and powder with the permission of the Royalist commander. A regiment of Continentals burned the blockhouse and filled in much of the ditch system to prevent the British from occupying the fort. The fort today is part of Fort Point State Park. We join the communities surrounding the fort in celebrating the 250th anniversary of Fort Pownall and recognize its importance in the history of our State; (HLS 329)

Stan Sawyer, of Harpswell, on his retirement after 40 years as an educator. During his career, Mr. Sawyer was a teacher,

coach, principal, assistant superintendent of schools and superintendent of schools. He served as President of the Maine School Superintendents Association and as a member of its Funding Committee and currently serves as chair of its Construction Committee. He also served as President of the New England Association of School Superintendents. Mr. Sawyer received the Maine School Superintendents Association's Leadership Award. We extend our appreciation to Mr. Sawyer for his commitment to the youth of the State and wish him well in his future endeavors; (HLS 333)

Poland Spring Water Company, which was recognized as an environmental leader by Governor John E. Baldacci for reaching key environmental sustainability benchmarks set by the Department of Environmental Protection's Office of Innovation. Poland Spring achieved a 46% fuel reduction, far surpassing the 37% goal it set going into 2008. The company also committed to recycling 92% of its waste stream, a goal that was reached by year-end and that has since been surpassed with an impressive 96%. Meaghan Martin, of Hollis Center, who is the recipient of a 2009 Prudential Spirit of Community Award for exemplary volunteer service. This award, presented by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals, honors young volunteers across America who have demonstrated extraordinary commitment to serving their communities. Meaghan is a Distinguished Finalist in this year's program. A senior at Bonny Eagle High School, Meaghan raised $1,600 for breast cancer research and patient care by soliciting donations and pledges through a website, press releases, letters and telephone calls for her participation in equestrian competitions. Funds raised were donated to the Maine Medical Center Research Institute. We congratulate Meaghan on her receiving this award and thank her for her dedication to her community and State; (HLS 337)

Cadillac Mountain Sports in Ellsworth, which has received the 2009 Top Drawer Award from the Ellsworth Area Chamber of Commerce. Cadillac Mountain Sports is owned by Matthew Curtis of Bar Harbor. The award is presented to a member of the chamber that has made a substantial contribution to the growth, development and improvement of Ellsworth and the surrounding area. Mr. Curtis and his wife Cheryl opened their first store in Bar Harbor in 1989. There are currently 5 locations in Maine. Robert Maddocks, of Ellsworth, who has received the 2009 Citizen of the Year Award from the Ellsworth Area Chamber of Commerce. The award is presented to an outstanding individual based on community service to the Ellsworth area, service to others and excellence in one's own profession. Mr. Maddocks began his education career as a 6th grade teacher in 1965. He has served as director of Ellsworth's adult education program since 1985. In 1988, he became a licensed preacher and has led the congregation at the Eden Baptist Church in Salisbury Cove for 21 years. We congratulate Mr. Maddocks and thank him for his tireless contributions to the community and the State; (HLS 339)

the Sanford High School Marching Band, on its invitation to perform in the 56th Inaugural Parade in Washington, D.C. after the swearing-in ceremony of President Barack Obama. President Obama announced he was "honored to invite these talented groups and individuals to participate." The invited organizations embody the best of our nation's history, diversity and commitment to service. A group of experienced military musicians used their expertise to assess the applicants' skills and assist in the selection process. Michelle Paquette, of Saco, who has received the Girl Scout Gold Award. Muriel Havenstein, of Nobleboro, jazz pianist and Maine musical treasure. Mrs. Havenstein was born and raised in New York City and started playing the piano professionally at age 16. She joined the all-girl swing band Estelle and Her Brunettes which traveled around during World War II. She met and married a young Marine, Bob Havenstein, in 1947, and took time off from her music to raise 2 daughters and a son. In the 1960s, they relocated to mid-coast Maine and Mrs. Havenstein returned to her music. She was a well-known figure on the jazz scene, playing with local as well as national celebrities. She served as an inspiration and mentor to many musicians, both young and old alike. Mrs. Havenstein will be deeply missed, not only by her family and her many friends, but also by the entertainment community of Maine which has been so enriched by her presence for decades; (IN MEMORIAM) (HLS 343)

Bernard "Doc" Mann, of Bangor, on the occasion of his 100th Birthday, June 9, 2009. Mr. Mann, who was a longtime schoolteacher, is a Bangor native and is a graduate of Bangor High School and Holy Cross College. For more than four decades, he taught Latin and French at the former Garland Street Junior High School, now the William S. Cohen School, and later at Bangor High School. He is a long-standing member of St.

John Catholic Church and was involved in area Boy Scouting. Mr. Mann has lived a remarkably full life and in his later years has been active at the Hammond Street Senior Center. During a celebration of his birthday at the center, he led a rendition of "Happy Birthday" on the piano, which he plays with skill and grace. Mr. Mann was married for many years and he met his wife, Mary, who passed away in 1994, when they were both schoolteachers in the 1930s. We join with the people and mayor of Bangor and Governor John E. Baldacci in extending our congratulations and best wishes to Bernard "Doc" Mann on the centennial celebration of his life; (HLS 344)

Arlene Greenleaf, of Bethel, on her retirement as an emergency medical services worker after 37 years of dedicated

service to her community and to the State. Ms. Greenleaf was permanently disabled when she was severely injured in the line of duty while transporting a patient to a hospital. During Ms. Greenleaf's long and distinguished career providing exceptional patient care and transportation, she has contributed greatly to her profession. She has taught thousands of hours of continuing education programs for emergency medical technician licensing. We extend our deep appreciation to Ms. Greenleaf on her many years of dedication to the emergency medical services profession and to the people of Maine, and we send her our best wishes; (HLS 345)

the Town of Shirley, on the 175th Anniversary of its incorporation. Shirley is situated at the head of the beautiful Piscataquis River. It was incorporated as Shirley Mills township on March 4, 1834. The town was named for the Massachusetts hometown of Joseph Kelsey, the local Representative to the Maine Legislature at the time of its incorporation. the North Jay Grange #10, on the celebration of its 135th anniversary. Organized March 27, 1874, it is the 3rd oldest grange in the State. The North Jay Grange building is listed in the National Register of Historic Places, and is also the site of the last grange store in the United States. Michael Church, a student at Mt. Blue High School, who was named the Career and Technical Education Student of the Year for the Class of 2009. the Bangor High School Junior Engineering Technical Society teams (JETS), which won the State competitions for the eighth year in a row. Varsity A team went on to place 12th in the nation, and Varsity B team placed 23rd in the nation. More than 2,200 teams in the nation participated. The JETS are coached by Mark Brittelli. Hilary Sivik, of Bangor, who has received the Girl Scout Gold Award. This is the highest award in Senior Girl Scouting and is given for excellence in skills development, leadership, personal growth and community service. For her Gold Award project, Hilary restored the gardens and created raised beds at the Sylvia Ross Home so that nursing home residents are able to garden. Matthew Dunckel, of North Bridgton, a teacher at Lake Region Middle School, who is one of nearly 600 teachers in the nation invited to attend the 2009 Mickelson ExxonMobil Teacher Academy. Developed in conjunction with the National Science Teachers Association and Math Solutions Professional Development, the Mickelson ExxonMobil Teacher Academy is an annual math and science professional development program that enables teachers to hone science and math teaching skills, enhance curricula and discover innovative new ways to inspire students. Devon Woodard, of Carmel, a member of Boy Scout Troop No. 18, who has attained the high rank and distinction of Eagle Scout.
