Extended Activity. Check with your teacher if you have time to do the actual sea floor map.

(1) In this activity you will be finding the depths of all the locations on your grid. You already have column C. Record those depths on the Grid Map Worksheet. Using the same technique you used on column C record the depth of each point on the other columns on the Grid Map Worksheet.

(2) Now you are to draw in the contour lines. You need to remember the following rules for contour lines.

a. no contour line ends on a map. It can run off the side.

b. no contour line may cross any other contour line.

c. the closer the lines are together the steeper the elevation change.

d. Once you have your line on your map you may elect to color the different elevations.

Science SC.5.2.1

Use models and/or simulations to represent and investigate features of objects, events, and processes in the real world.

n this lesson, students will learn why accurate maps are important and how they are being made using new technologies that go way beyond the old line and sinker method. They will learn about sonar and single beam mapping then why and how multibeam mapping has now taken its place. They will then use a multibeam map of the major Hawaiian Islands to answer a series of questions.
