Fishing Report 9/4/10

The drum blitz continues! LOTS of slot and over the slot sized drum today and tonight. Good numbers of pompano and blues, with some Virginia mullet and black drum as well. Tons of jumping mullet streaming by the pier. Fall fishing has begun!! - Robin Orr

Fishing Report 9/3/10

Puppy drum, blues, Spanish, and some mullet today. Lots of bait fish (jumping mullet and menhaden) in the water now. Conditions continue to improve! - Robin Orr

Fishing Report 8/30/10

Two tarpon over 120 lbs. were landed yesterday! One was caught by Stacy Pleasant, and the other by Mark Willis. Still lots of bait around. I walked out on the pier an hour or so ago, and saw lots of Spanish jumping. There was an over the slot drum landed on live bait earlier today, and another fisherman had two nice speckled trout (one right at 4 lbs.). - Capt. Rob Orr

Fishing Report 8/27/10

This time of the year, I hear a lot of people talking about "smelling" or "seeing" fall in the air. I've seen a little of that this week with the cooler mornings and NE wind, but where I have really seen a hugh shift is in the ocean! The water is FULL of bait and fish. I went out on the pier yesterday afternoon for half an hour. During that time I caught and released an 8 lb. puppy drum, lost another drum, and missed a nice trout; all in 30 minutes! Today they are catching flounder, mullet, they have lost some nice drum, and there are blues, Spanish, trout, and spots moving through. They had a king mackerel sky one of the live baits first thing this morning, but lost it after a short run. The larger jumping mullet are beginning to stream under the pier as well. Time to go fishing! - Capt. Rob Orr

Fishing Report 8/23/10

Easterly winds last week brought in good numbers of baitfish, both jumping mullet and menhaden. Bluefish made an unusual August appearance, with good runs on GotCha plugs from the pier, & more schools were feeding just offshore - it looked more like October than August, with the birds working over blues feeding on baitfish. There were nice sized mullet, pompano and puppy drum caught this weekend, as well as some large sheepshead. Spots showed up Sunday afternoon. Several Tarpon strikes, but none landed. -Robin Orr

Fishing Report 8/17/10

Some nice drum, pompano, and mullet showing up this week. 2 Tarpon jumped off earlier in the week. Lots of Spanish around - the challenge is to get them to hit, as there's a lot of natural bait in the water as well. - Robin Orr

Fishing Report 8/10/10

Typical summer fishing the last several days on the JR. Lots of Spanish around, just hard to get them to hit. We weighed a nice speckled trout yesterday morning, and there have been a few pompano reported. A nice (100 lb. class) tarpon was lost yesterday afternoon out on the end. The hooks pulled when the fish was only 25 yards out. There have been a few spots, sheepshead, puppy drum, and black drum mixed in as well. Nothing hot and heavy, but a little of everything. - Capt. Rob Orr

Fishing Report 8/6/10

We have seen normal summertime fishing the last several days. A few spots and mullet on bloodworms at night, a decent number of large puppy drum, and blues/Spanish when the water is clear. They are still seeing/hooking a few tarpon off the end, and there was a nice king lost earlier this week. The wind is supposed to shift to the East tomorrow and remain there for several days. That should clear the water and pack more bait in on the beach. - Capt. Rob Orr

Fishing Report 7/31/10

Joey Kellum landed a 66 lb. Tarpon this afternoon on the JR! They had a king strike and jumped off another tarpon just before dark. I weighed a 4 1/2 lb. Spanish mackerel that was caught on live bait as well. - Capt. Rob Orr

Fishing Report 7/30/10

Good summer fishing today on the JR. They had a really good Spanish bite just before dark, with some really nice sized fish mixed in. There were quite a few puppy drum caught, and we weighed one 5 lb. speckled trout! Fishermen also reported seeing a big school of black drum cruising around under the pier. They managed to land 4-5 of the black drum, but most of them were hesitant to bite due to the clear water. Also reported were a few flounder, spots, mullet, and bluefish. - Capt. Rob Orr

Fishing Report 7/29/10

Alan Pleasant caught a 25 lb. King yesterday on the JR. Good job Alan! Big schools of menhaden moving up the beach, & some large fish like this king tracking them. Scattered Spanish for the past several days, as well as some over the slot size puppy drum, & some 5-6 lb black drum. - Robin Orr

Fishing Report 7/25/10

Scattered bottom fishing at night over the weekend. Spots and mullet made up the majority of the catches, with a few drum mixed in. I have heard of a few flounder, blues, and Spanish. A 16 lb. king was landed on the 23rd, and there have been several tarpon sighted cruising by. The menhaden continue to move up the beach, and I saw the first couple schools of jumping mullet go by on Friday.Angelo DePaola just landed a 13 lb. king mackerel! Big Spanish are hitting on live baits. - Capt. Rob Orr

Fishing Report 7/21/10

The Southwesterly wind continues to blow here at Topsail, but the fishing remains steady. There has been a good spot and mullet bite at night for the past week, with bloodworms being the best bait. Mullet, flounder, trout, and puppy drum have all been scattered in with the spots both during the day and night. Live mullet, minnows, and live shrimp have been the top producing baits. The tarpon continue to pass by in outstanding numbers. I have personally never seen this many tarpon for this long of a time period. Lots of menhaden schools are moving northward up the beach, and I have seen several schools of jumping mullet already. A 100 lb tarpon was landed on the 17th, and a 20 lb. king on the 18th. There were 12 tarpon strikes yesterday alone, with one fish being lost around the pylons, and one breaking the line after a 35-minute fight. - Capt. Rob Orr

Fishing Report 7/15/10

TARPON TIME! Lots of tarpon moving through the area right now. There were 16 confirmed strikes, 5 hookups, and two tarpon landed today. - Capt. Rob Orr

Fishing Report 7/15/10

Good runs of spots, VA mullet, & croakers late last night. With the summer heat, the best catches are going to be early and late, and after dark. LOTS of Tarpon around the pier this morning - just really picky about hitting a bait! Scattered drum (some over the slot size) & sheepshead this week as well. - Robin Orr

Fishing Report 7/11/10

Spots are still here with bloodworms being the best bait for them. Spanish are being caught on GotCha lures late in the afternoon - until dark. Two big schools of Tarpon were sighted from the pier just before dark yesterday. Nights have produced good catches of VA mullet and spots, with the occasional black drum mixed in. 26 lb king caught yesterday. Good summer fishing overall - early morning, late afternoon, and after dark are the best times now. - Robin Orr

Fishing Report 7/7/10

Two tarpon were hooked yesterday afternoon. Both were lost after substantial fights. Fishermen on the end reported seeing quite a few more traveling by. There were two Spanish mackerel caught this afternoon over 4 lbs. The spots are still hanging around as well, and a few of the nice summer whiting are beginning to show up. Also a few keeper flounder mixed in. No one species is "hot and heavy" right now, but there is a good mix of fish in the area. Mornings and afternoons, and also at night, are the best times to fish right now. - Capt. Rob Orr

Fishing Report 7/3/10

What a beautiful day! Nor'easter is still blowing here at Topsail, and it has changed the fishing for the better. We saw spots off and on all day yesterday and through the night last night. There were also some nice mullet brought in after dark yesterday. The drum have also returned with this NE wind. The wind is cutting some really nice sloughs up and down the beach; this is just what the doctor ordered to shake things up a bit. The bluefish are also still around early in the morning and late in the evening, with a few Spanish mixed in. The water is mixed green color right now. - Capt. Rob Orr

Fishing Report 7/3/10

The spots and some nice Virginia mullet hit yesterday and through the night. The forecast is for sunny skies; enjoy the 4th! - Robin Orr

Fishing Report 6/30/10

A few early morning blues and scattered Spanish for the past few days. The wind has been hard SW and tough to deal with in the afternoon. Spots off and on through the day and at night, with some Whiting at night. Saw some keeper flounder yesterday, as well as a couple of nice trout.

The wind fell out last night, and it's calm now. The wind is forecast to go to the ENE for the next few days. This should clear up the water and improve the fishing.

The weather forecast is GREAT for the upcoming weekend - moderate temps and sunny skies. Have a great 4th! - Robin Orr

Fishing Report 6/24/10

Fishing has been slightly slower the past two days. Although there are still some nice fish to be caught, the pace has definitely shifted into summer mode. Our water temperatures are already up to mid-summer levels. Early mornings and late evenings are by far the best times to fish. I did see some large spots yesterday, and the bluefish bit well early this morning; a few Spanish were mixed in. Small flounder and sheepshead have been hanging around the pier pilings. Fresh or live baits are outproducing the artificial and frozen baits. - Capt. Rob Orr

Fishing Report 6/20/10

Good summer fishing today. The Spanish mackerel and bluefish bite was above average throughout the day. We weighed several citation size pompano that were caught both on the pier and in the surf. I also saw some very nice summer whiting landed, along with spots and sheepshead. There was a small cobia landed on a bottom rig, and one of the guys plugging on the end lost a 10-15 lb. king mackerel that he hooked on a gotcha plug. There were no king fishermen on the end today, but yesterday they reported seeing several schools of tarpon cruising by, and there were many surface schools of cigar minnows around the pier throughout the day. There was also a sailfish sighted free jumping just off the end of the pier! - Capt. Rob Orr

Fishing Report 6/15/10

A good mixed bag today on the pier. I saw good numbers of spots on bloodworms, several nice puppy drum, lots of blues, a few Spanish, and a few sheepshead. - Capt. Rob Orr

Update 6/12/10

I just received word that the FIRST KING OF THE YEAR was landed this morning. It was 33 lbs. and caught by Bennet Tolar on a live bluefish! The water is clear, and the bait thick.- Rob

Fishing Report 6/11/10

The Spanish mackerel and bluefish are still here in good numbers, but the bite has been restricted to early in the morning (first hour of daylight) and late afternoon (last two hours of light). Yesterday morning they had an excellent Spanish and blue run right after sunrise. Gotcha plugs are still the lure of choice, but as the water warms and they start feeding on smaller shad/minnows, I expect the diamond jigs to start producing as well. Flounder, drum (black and puppy), sheepshead, pompano, and spots have all been scattered throughout the day and night. I weighed a 4 ½ lb. and a 9 lb. sheepshead that were caught yesterday afternoon on the pier. - Capt. Rob Orr

Fishing Report 6/6/10

There are some nice drum and sheepshead around now, as well as spots, blues and Spanish. - Robin Orr

Fishing Report 6/4/10

Good blue fishing, with a few nice Spanish mixed in. The Spanish and blues have only been biting early in the morning and late in the afternoon. There were several nice pompano caught today on gotcha plugs. If they are thick enough to be caught on plugs, I hate to think what someone could do with some live sand fleas! ...I also saw a 5 3/4 lb. black drum landed. It seems that they have moved in lately. The best way to target them is with sand fleas or fresh whole shrimp fished on a bottom rig near the pier. Capt. Rob Orr

Fishing Report 6/2/10

Spanish and blues are still here! They caught them in decent numbers both yesterday afternoon, this morning, and then again late this afternoon. Rob Orr

Fishing Report 5/30/10

Spot Run!! It's Sunday morning, and the nice sized spots are here! The wind is now SSE at 8, with a 2 -3 foot swell. Pretty day at the beach! (Hong Ung caught this 6 lb. Spanish on 5/22). Robin Orr

Fishing Report 5/29/10

Big chopper blues, and a few drum, flounder, and Spanish made up today's catch. It ended up being a beautiful day down here at Topsail. I heard numerous reports of good drum fishing up and down the beach. It looks like they have finally arrived! Capt Rob Orr

JR Fishing Report 5/27/10

Fishing has been up and down this week. During the first part of the week, we had really good Spanish and blue fishing. When the NE wind moved in Tuesday night, it muddied the water and killed the Spanish bite. Wednesday was mostly slow, with only a handful of mullet reported. Today the wind finally switched back to the SE, and by dark the water was beginning to clear. There was a good mix of fish caught today; although no one species was hot and heavy, fishing was steady throughout the day. A 5 1/4 lb. black drum was landed, and a 7 lb., 26 1/2 inch puppy drum. I heard reports of spots, flounder, trout, sheepshead and blues being caught. Several of the blues were "chopper" blues, ranging from 5-20 lbs. - Capt. Rob Orr

JR Fishing Report 5/22/10

Beautiful weather down here at Topsail over the last couple of days. The wind has generally been out of the east, and has brought in lots of bait and very clear green water. With the clearer water came a few changes in the fishing. The Spanish have shifted from an all day, on/off bite, to a hard one hour bite right after sunrise and right before sunset, and then scattered throughout the mid portions of the day. The east wind brought a substantial increase in the size of Spanish; I weighed one at 4.75 lb Thursday, and Pheng Nop caught a 7.2 lb Spanish on Friday! (See picture). The bigger 2-4 lb blues are coming by the pier in large schools and many were caught this week. A few of the "chopper" blues have also shown up; one 16 lb. chopper was caught on live bait Thursday. The sheepshead have shown up around the pilings, and several people have had nice catches. Black and puppy drum have also been around the pier this week; I saw several nice puppy drum cruising right behind the breakers yesterday. A few flounder were also landed this week. Capt. Rob Orr

Jolly Roger Fishing Report 5/20/10

The blues were hitting on almost every cast, with some nice Spanish mixed in. Some large cobia cruised by today and the mullet bit last night. Robin Orr

Jolly Roger Fishing Report 5/16/10

Spanish mackerel and blue fishing continues to be outstanding. Limits of Spanish and blues are becoming a regular occurrence. I weighed one Spanish yesterday that tipped the scales at 4 1/4lbs! (See Picture of John Poston) I don't know that I can remember a year when this type of fishing was this good for any length of time. We are going on two weeks of nearly non-stop action now, and barring any major weather system, there isn't an end in sight. When the wind shifted back to the SW late last week the mullet returned. There were some very nice catches of mullet both Friday and Saturday night. — Capt. Rob Orr

Jolly Roger Fishing Report 5/13/10

More good plugging action today. Blues and a few Spanish throughout the morning, and then a really good Spanish bite this afternoon. I don't know exactly why, but the Spanish have been hitting much better in the afternoons lately. There were a few nicer Spanish mixed in with the 15-17" fish today. I also saw a 10-12lb chopper blue landed. Several cobia were seen cruising by this morning. — Capt. Rob Orr

Jolly Roger Fishing Report 5/11/10

It just doesn't get any better than this... At 7:00 PM this afternoon, right about the time that the Spanish fishing frenzy begins most afternoons, I counted ONLY 7 people fishing from the end of the pier. The key word here is FISHING; there were around 35 other people near or on the end OBSERVING. The reason none of them were fishing, was that they had already REACHED THEIR LIMIT of Spanish mackerel! From 12 PM until dark, I witnessed one of the best Spanish runs I have ever seen. Between me and two friends, in 3 hours of fishing this afternoon, we caught our limit of 45 Spanish, and proceeded to release 80 more fish! This has been going on consistently for 5 days now. I also saw two turtles (one leatherback) and numerous schools of bait go by. If you enjoy fishing for Spanish and blues the time is NOW! — Capt. Rob Orr
