Significance of the Study
The urgent need to begin the process of improving the quality of the Nigerian environment which in a sense directly or indirectly impacts on the quality of life necessitated this study. The poor handling of municipal solid waste, which includes household waste, from the point of generation contributes to a reduction in environmental quality and by extension, a reduction in the quality of life, among other indicators. This research, therefore would be beneficial to members of the public since some of the household waste generated by them find its way to public areas and

It is believed that an understanding of the waste hierarchy guideline, knowledge of which would be assessed during the fieldwork will invariably change the people’s mentality on how solid waste should be handled at source. This study will therefore add to the body of existing literatures on the source separation of household solid waste and equally become a guideline for other cities across Nigeria where mounting municipal refuse remains a problem for municipal waste authorities. More importantly, it is hoped that the findings from this study would spur policymakers to urgently consider the formulation and enforcement of waste regulations aimed at encouraging the source separation of household solid waste to prevent the quantum loss of vital waste resources at source.
