50 Question 17 is an open-ended question, which is a followup to question 16. The various responses from the respondents were categorised into topical issues as shown on the table. It is interesting to note that 21% of the respondents believe that separate bins for each category of waste would help to prevent the foul odour arising from mixing organic waste with other types of waste, especially in the hot tropics where foods decay so fast due to high temperatures, while
31% are of the opinion that putting waste in categories in separate bins would help to recover useful materials that can be recovered for reuse or recycled into other products. It is the more interesting to see that 26.5% of n consider such a practice as good for the environment. In summary, all the three major responses are proofs that people in the study area are conscious of the fact that having separate waste bins for the source separation of household solid waste is a healthy environmental practice.
