Breast Cancer Benefit October 2008 Dear Family and Friends, Susan G. Komen for the Cure was founded over 25 years ago on a promise between two sisters. Nancy G. Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan G. Komen, that she would do everything in her power to end breast cancer forever. The power of that promise has lead them to be the largest and most progressive grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists, the only organization fighting to cure breast cancer at every stage – from the causes, to the cures, to the pain and anxiety of every moment in between. On Friday evening October 24th, my Parrot Head Club and I are hosting an event at the Huntington Hilton to raise funds in the fight against breast cancer. All proceeds will be given to support the Susan G. Komen for the Cure through The Greater NYC Affiliate. Up to 75% of the net income from each Komen domestic Affiliate is dedicated to fighting breast cancer in that Affiliates community. Every year, Komen Affiliates awards grants to local hospitals and community organizations that provide breast health education and breast cancer screening and treatment programs for medically underserved women and men. Remaining net income (a minimum of 25%) supports the Komen Award and Research Grant Program, which funds groundbreaking breast cancer research, meritorious awards and educational and scientific programs around the world. From the 1940’s until recently, the rate of new cases of breast cancer in the United States increased by a little over one percent a year. An estimated 182,460 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed in American women in 2008 alone. We all know of someone or maybe even yourself, who has been affected by this dreaded disease. I am hoping you might be able to support my efforts this year by making a donation to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Checks should be made payable to Susan G. Komen and returned to me by October 18th. Thank you for your consideration of this request for your support.
