Preface for the 2016 Annual Report

Once again it is time for the Annual Report, which presents an opportunity to review the work of the Church Organization over the past twelve months
The Church is a living organism, a body, but it moves forward through organization as well as by the direction of God’s Spirit.
As you read these reports, you will see both the evidence of organization and the Spirt of God.
Read with thanksgiving and let your reading lead you to thinking and planning for greater effectiveness in a New Church Year.
We express the gratitude of the Church to the ones who did the mechanical work of these reports to get them to us on time. Our thanks to all who prepared the reports. This is a historic document in the life of the Middleton Baptist Church.
May God continue to show His blessing upon us.

Don’t weep for me
For I’ve made it home
Through Heaven’s gates
There I may roam.

Ministry Through Pastoral Staff

Lead Pastor’s Report

Let me begin this annual report with thanksgiving. I echo the words of the apostle Paul in Philippians 1:3-6:
3. I thank my God every time I remember you. 4 In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy 5 because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, 6 being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.
I am deeply grateful for another year to have shared in the life of Middleton Baptist Church. I count myself blessed to be able to serve this church and community in Jesus’ name. I am excited about the good work that God has begun in our midst and wait in anticipation as to how he will continue to bring that work to completion among us. I am unable in this short report to list all the ways that I am rejoicing of witnessing God at work among us in the past year; but allow me to list what I see as being a few of the major highlights:
PRAYER CONFERENCES
We hosted two prayer conferences one in March and another in May: one on “Intercession” and the other on “Listening to God”. These were taught by Claude and Phyllis Bonnell, along with Sheila White. I believe strongly in these conferences as they are an opportunity, early in the year, to readjust our lives to one of our most important task as a follower of Jesus - that of prayer. Personally, I find this readjustment is needed as I am reminded as a pastor, the ministry of prayer, is one of the top investments I need to make with my time, that I can be more effective in communication with God instead than running ahead of him on my own.
COMMUNITY OUTREACH
There is much to celebrate but wanted to specifically highlight our Christmas outreach to Hollow Drive and Sunset Meadows. This enabled us to make new inroads on Hollow Drive (something we need to continue in 2017) and to bring the joy of Christmas to Sunset Meadows. This was certainly a highlight of the Christmas season for me. I will have the memory of sitting around the clubhouse at Sunset Meadows singing Christmas carols with residents there etched in my mind for a long time.
ALPHA/EMOTIONAL HEALTHY SPIRITUALITY
Sometimes God likes to surprise us, and significantly exceed our expectations. This was certainly the case with Alpha/EHS. We had over 70 people regularly participate each week and there was significant spiritual growth that I witnessed take place. This was certainly much needed and fruitful groups for us to run. A special thank you to the cooks, kitchen crew and small group leaders, without whom Alpha would have not been possible.
MINISTRY FAIR
As a follow-up to Alpha/EHS, we hosted a ministry/small group fair following church in the fall. I was encouraged by the number of new people who had not been involved in ministry or a small group that signed up to be involved.
SUMMER AT MBC
This summer with both Leah Morrison and Joe Gosbee came on staff as we went full throttle for most of the summer. The two highlights were Vacation Bible School (VBS) and Performing Arts camp, both of which allowed us to reach out beyond our church, into our community.
REFUGEE SPONSORSHIP
January 25th 2017, will mark the completion of our official sponsorship commitments to the Al Manani family. It hardly seems possible that it was a year ago, that a delegation of 30+ people met them at the Halifax Airport. It has been a year of both joys and challenges as our committee has worked hard to help the Al Manani’s settle here in Canada, but what I am most grateful for, is that as we end this sponsorship period, I can truly say that I have made a new set of good friends in the Al Manani’s. While our formal sponsorship relationship may be ending, the Al Manani’s are still in need of care from people in our church and community, who will befriend them and help them continue to integrate themselves into our community. So please, if you haven’t yet introduced yourself to them, stop over to their home for a cup of tea…they will be glad to get to know you.
SIGNS
I know it may seem insignificant compared to the other ministry opportunities we have undertaken this past year, but I am very thankful for the signs we have at the front and back of our building. They allow us to be a presence in our community in a new way and a part of our ministry of hospitality, as we welcome others among us.
As always, I must express my thankfulness for the staff team I am privileged to work with each day. They have made significant contributions both known and unknown to the overall wellbeing and spiritual health of our church. I am forever in their debt and I am grateful that “for such a time as this” God has given me the blessing of working alongside them.
Finally let me reiterate my thankfulness for you - Middleton Baptist Church. The church is not its building, nor is it the staff, the church is the people of God living in community with one another pursuing the same goal of being disciples and making disciples of Jesus Christ for the glory of God. It is this goal that we aim at together. May the name of the Lord Jesus Christ be even more greatly glorified among us in the year ahead!!!
Rich blessings in Christ,

Pastor Danny Smith

PASTOR OF CONGREGATIONAL CARE REPORT – 2016
The Apostle Paul wrote to the Galatian church: “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.” How amazing it is to have the great privilege – and responsibility – of being in a personal love relationship with our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. And how amazing it is that we are on this journey of faith together as our Lord works in and through us, meeting us where we are at, transforming and growing us to be more like him, teaching us to appropriate the freedom he bought for us through his atonement, taking us deeper into our relationship with him as we shed lies and grasp the truth that sets us free, and sharing the truth with those who need his saving grace in their lives. This is the heart and soul of ministry together as the Body of Christ. Once again, I can say that this ministry has been a privilege and honour – albeit at times difficult and painful. But our Sovereign God is at work among us; praise his name!

As Pastor of Congregational Care, responsibilities in 2016 included the following:

1. Small Groups Ministry – From January to May, 2016, our small groups continued from the previous fall. We celebrated our small groups ministry with our annual potlucks in January and May with fellowship, food and praise to God through testimonies. In the fall, we postponed the start of small groups in order to take part in the Alpha/Emotionally Healthy Spirituality courses available to the whole of MBC as well as other churches and our communities.

We had a sign-up for small groups in October. Some classes began in November; others opted to begin in January. There are 9 small groups, 3 prayer groups and the Mom 2 Mom group which meets monthly. Thank you to the leaders of all these groups and to those who faithfully desire to be part of a group in order to connect more deeply with our Lord and each other as well as to care for each other through prayer and acts of kindness.

2. Visitation Ministry – I met with many people in 2016 - both those who were part of MBC and those who were not. I visited, chatted, counselled and connected with many of you in your homes, in cafes, in restaurants, in hospitals, in nursing homes, in my home, in my office, in cars, and at the shore in Port George and have had many conversations on Sunday mornings, Monday and Tuesday mornings at MBC, in stores, on the street corners and even via telephone. More and more, visitation is taking many different forms, but the important thing for me is to be faithful, to be available, to be present, to listen, to be considerate and compassionate, sometimes to deliver the hard truth and always to represent Christ. I pray that God has found me faithful this year and will grow and teach me more and more in this area. Thank you for your patience and grace.

3. Welcome ministry – I continued to meet with newcomers to MBC this year when possible. I have greeted at the main Commercial St. doors, provided a greeter at the School St. entrance, continue to monitor blue slips, met with the ushers and made myself available for prayer purposes at the end of the worship services.

4. I had the privilege of baptizing Judy French and leading her in baptismal classes. I preached 11 times plus co-preached with Pastor Danny on Easter Sunday. I also led the worship service several times and shared in the leading of the Lord’s Supper. I conducted worship services throughout the year at Grace Haven and Heart of the Valley Nursing Homes. Thank you to those who assisted me in these services and thank you to Claude, Joey, Danny and Derek for also sharing in this ministry to our shut-ins. I also spoke at the Annapolis-Digby Association spring meeting, at the Well (recorded), at a deacons’ committee meeting on sharing the gospel with shut-ins and at an ABW meeting on ministry opportunities.

5. I shared with Pastor Danny the officiating at one wedding and conducting pre-marital classes. I officiated at 2 funerals and co-officiated 2 funerals with Pastor Danny.

6. On a personal note, I led one of the Emotionally Healthy Spirituality classes during Alpha, was involved in two small groups at MBC, was part of two groups with other pastors outside of MBC and attended the prayer conference in March. I continued to be a part of a support/fellowship/study group of female pastors, and attended 3 spiritual retreats.

7. The following are other areas of ministry I was involved in:

  • Attended most monthly prayer meeting and led a few of them.

  • Attended most monthly meetings of the Well for leaders.

  • Organized the prayer vigil at Easter.

  • Organized leaders for the Wednesday morning prayer group during July and August and filled in when necessary.

  • Scheduled weekly visits for one of our shut-ins.

  • Organized Hanging of the Greens service.

  • Organized readers and candle lighters for the advent wreath.

  • Organized the Christmas caroling evening.

  • Helped with the Prayer and reflection time in our sanctuary in December.

  • Met, when necessary, with folks requiring assistance through our deacons’ fund.

  • Organized meals for those in need when necessary.

  • Outside of MBC, I concluded 2 – 3 year terms of serving on the board of directors for RSVP (formerly Stonecroft) Ministries Canada.

Thank you for your prayers, encouragement and support in 2016. I pray that God will continue to give us all a deep desire for him that we may grow deeper in our relationship and walk with him and each other.

Respectfully Submitted,

Pastor Robin McCoombs

Pastor of Family Ministries Report

First, I would like to say a big thank you for investing in the lives of children and youth this past year. We are so blessed at Middleton Baptist Church to have a multi- generational church family, who love Jesus, love others and serve in His name.

There have been several highlights this past year, such as the privilege of having the Al Manani family with us in Middleton. We have also sent people out to other parts of the world to share Christ’s love. We started the fall off with Alpha and the Emotional Healthy Spirituality course, and have seen God work through these times. We have served in our own neighborhood and have reached out to children, teens, adults and seniors around us who need Jesus. I look forward to serving with you in this brand-new year of ministry.
As we look back to see what this past year has looked like, may we hear from the Lord the areas we are to focus on in 2017.

Children’s Church
We have 40 children who attend our Children’s Church ministry on a regular or semi-regular basis, as well as a few others who attend on occasion. We have three groups: Preschool, Grade Primary-Three and Grade Four-Six which run during the school year. This year we have taught the Bible in a couple different ways. Some groups have gone through the Bible as One Big Story, which helped cement the children’s understanding of God’s Word, and other groups have studied different themes of the Bible or specific Biblical books. A morning at Children’s Church includes a Bible story, learning memory verses, a snack, games, crafts and usually a fun skit or video.
Teaching children and helping them grow up in the faith is a great responsibility of our church family. When parents come forward and dedicate their children, we as a church family make promises to stand by them and help them in the process. One practical way to stand beside parents and help in the spiritual raising up of their children is to be a Children’s Church teacher. I know my Sunday School teachers in my early years were instrumental in my life and faith, and I’m sure many of us have similar stories. With this said, unfortunately we are often short on teachers for our children’s ministries. Currently, we are in need of 2-3 more adults who would be willing to teach our Grade 4-6 class once every 4-6 weeks, as there is only one current teacher for this class. This is a wonderful opportunity to spiritually invest in young lives. Please prayerfully consider this. We don’t expect anyone to be a perfect teacher, but rather have a willing heart and a love for Jesus and children.
Children’s Church Teachers: Connie Lewis, Jill Cox, Kathy Reesor, Angela Harvie & Holly Gosbee

Children’s Church Helpers: Carmen Smale, Tim & Eileen Prosser, Annika Lilly, Lisa Salley, Don Harvie, Juanita Annis, Leah & Holly Morrison, Joan Montgomery, Shauna Grimwood, Jackie Thompson, Judson & Will Luttman, Thomas Miller, Amy Gesner, Lance & Marissa Feener & Annie Miller.
Thank you to these wonderful teachers and helpers who faithfully serve in Children’s Church! You are awesome! Thank you as well to Lisa Smith and her team, who serve in the nursery! I’d like to also thank our children for the beautiful Easter bookmarks they gave out at our worship service on Easter Sunday. Also, great job to the kids for doing a superb presentation at their annual Christmas concert on Sunday, December 4th as they shared ‘A Charlie Brown Christmas.’ And furthermore, congrats to the Children’s Church kids for exceeding their goal and being able to purchase four hens, two roosters, a pig and a goat for families in developing countries through the Canadian Baptist Ministries ‘Hopeful Gifts for Change’ Missions Project!
Children’s Ministry Highlights

  • March Break Morning Out on March 18th - a fun morning out for the kids in our community which included worship, Bible stories, games, crafts, snacks and building friendships.

  • Community Easter Egg Hunt on March 26th at Rotary Park, and then had activities to follow in the FLC. 100+ children attended this event again this year, and heard about the hope of Jesus.

  • Our Summer Student Leah Morrison who came on board full-time for the months of July & August to help with our summer children’s ministry. Leah did an amazing job helping to lead VBS, Performing Arts Camp and Summer Junior Church!

  • `Cave Quest` Vacation Bible School from July 25th-29th where 104 children attended, with 50% of the children having little or no church background. The children collected 403lbs of food for our local 12 Baskets Food Bank. Thank you VBS leaders and helpers for a great week!

  • VBS Sunday on July 31st, where we invited our VBS families to attend and were led by our VBS worship team and puppet team.

  • Performing Arts Camp from August 1st-5th with 36 kids in attendance. They put on an awesome performance on Sunday, August 7th. Great job kids!

  • MBC offered eight In-Service Day Childcare program afternoons on early dismissal days at Annapolis East Elementary School for children of working parents. Each month we hosted 40 children, and the children spent the afternoon learning about science, doing crafts, playing games, cooking/baking, doing scavenger hunts, touring different places in our community (we toured MacDonald Museum one afternoon), and more. Thanks to those who help at In-Service Day each month!

In-Service Day Childcare Program Helpers in 2016: Janice Miller, Joy Hartlen, Danny & Lisa Smith, Brenda Ellison, Jackie Thompson, Robert Prosser, Helen Rodgers, Joe & Holly Gosbee, Kirk Thurber, Shauna Grimwood, Garion Henry, Scotia Taylor, Judson Luttmann, Will Luttmann, Carolyn Hicks, George Amirault and Bonnie Johnson.

  • Children`s Church annual fall kick-off on September 11th with Bounce Kingdom, Face Painting, and other fun activities to encourage friends to join in Children`s Church this year.

Youth Group

Our Wednesday night youth group ministry provides a space for youth in grades 6-12 to come and worship, learn about God, play games together, and have fellowship with one another during the school year. We have on average 36-40 youth out each week. The number of middle school students continues to increase.

At the beginning of the 2016 year we were finishing up the Youth Alpha course with the teens. Following Alpha, we encouraged the youth to bring their questions about God, the Bible, faith, life, relationships, etc. forward in the ‘Question Box Series.’ We took until the end of May to answer each question.
During the summer months, we took a break from meeting weekly, but with Leah Morrison’s help we had a couple of special youth events such as a cottage swim trip to Zwicker’s Lake and a Messy Games Night at Rotary Park one evening. These were great ways to re-connect over the summer months.
This fall we have been going through the book of John and have been having good discussion in our small groups. I’d like to thank the youth leaders for serving the youth in this way. We are looking for more youth leaders who can help Wednesday nights, so please prayerfully consider this ministry. Thank you to our awesome current leaders!
Youth Group Leaders: Kirk & Diane Thurber, Jen & Ric Morrison, Ira Hatt and Joe & Holly Gosbee

Helpers (when home from University): Shauna Grimwood, Lindsay Miller & Garion Henry
Youth Ministry Highlights

  • Youth Winter Retreat took place at Kingswood Camp on February 12th-13th. Friday night we hung out, played games and had a movie, and Saturday we had discussion about Friday’s movie, played more, and Pastor Danny came for the afternoon and shared a challenge with the youth.

  • The youth led Puppets and a Black Light Presentation at our Christmas Eve service this year. Thanks!

Personal Highlights
