Conduit: Michael F. Hely, January 2008 - Accessioned: June 2008
B17226 (Oversize)
Hely Brothers Pty Ltd. XL Book/Ledger (1912 – 1920)
38cm x 26cm x 19cm, leather bound spine, linen/cloth covers (corroded), leather strap and buckle corroded). Inside cover signed “R. Britton Merewether 95”
The contents of this item are largely related to invoices collected by the Hely Brothers/Dora Creek Saw Mill Company. Although not in chronological order, for the most part, the invoices are from the period 1916 to 1920, with some individual invoices from 1912, 1914 and 1915, however the 1915 invoices are all related to Post Master telephone line rental charges.
For a small number of pages, there are records for Company products which were sent to customers. Here Companies and Individuals receiving goods are listed, along with the destination of the goods sent and the costs involved. Although there are many listings of goods sent to the Newcastle area, other places are included such as the Central Coast, Suburban Sydney, Adelaide, Melbourne, Wards River, Dungog, Perth Dunedin (New Zealand) and Wellington (New Zealand).
Customers of Hely Bros listed vary, including Private Companies, Manufacturers, Individuals, Co-operatives, Buggy/Wagon Companies, Engineering Companies, Merchants, NSW Charcoal, Railways Commissioners, the NSW Forestry Department, and a School of Arts (oxy-welding classes).
The invoices mostly come in pre-printed company format. Eighty five Companies’ printed invoices are present inside this book, with seven importers, five local grocers, two insurers, seven shippers, two newspaper advertisers, three local sawmills and two printing companies all utilised by Hely Bros within essentially a four year time period.
There are notable numbers of NSW Rail freight invoices, with a large volume of them existing in the rear of the item. There is also an original and handwritten copy of a New Zealand Customs Combined Certificate for importing goods to the country.
In the middle of the book there are rail haulage statistics in a particularly busy year in 1916.
The records indicate that in 1918 – 1919 the company made significant wholesale purchases, with machinery bought from Blacktown Timber Company, tools from the Engineers & Colliery Supplies Company (1919 – 1920), belting from the Ludowici & Son Ltd, timber supplies from T. Lister Timber Merchant (Mount Vincent), and straps, pulleys etc from H.P. Gregory & Co. The insurer at the time was the Liverpool & London & Globe Insurance Company Ltd.
The Invoices contain information relating to products and services purchased by Hely Brothers/Dora Creek Saw Mill Company, with items ranging from machinery down to rail costs and local grocery products such as candles and tents.
