AB - ABSTRACT: Vertical Seismic Profiles (VSP's) are used to provide high resolution images around deviated wells in complex geology in Colombia. The VSP images resolve faults and dipping reflectors. Key reflectors below a major reverse fault system, at depths in excess of 12,000 feet can be correlated unambiguously with the conventional 2D seismic data. VSP's also show reflections below the well which are used to establish correlation of the target reflector with the conventional seismic. Where there are no logs, the VSP provides a way to check the depth prognosis. Key markers are tracked across logs to the VSP with the same depth index. On a workstation the VSP images are compared with the surface seismic. Knowing the VSP phase and polarity, and the log correlation, can result in a refinement of the surface seismic interpretation. In some cases faults can be interpreted better on the higher resolution VSP, and the surface seismic interpretation can be refined simultaneously. Key markers below the fault zone appear deeper on the second VSP described than on the surface seismic. The patterns above and below the fault zone can be tied, but a shift is required between the two correlations, due to the difference in the estimates of velocity. Reconciling checkshot information alone with the surface seismic would have been difficult. Better resolution is achieved when migration of the VSP's is based on a simpler model of velocity than one based on the complex geology. In this tectonic setting, it is believed that the real velocity field is more related to current depth rather than strictly to the geological structure.

AB - ABSTRACT: In 1991/92 Shell Colombia successfully conducted two 3D seismic surveys in extremely difficult mountainous terrain and one in an urban area. Numerous cliffs of up to 400 m high and several rivers and canyons cross the first areas, whereas the work in urban area was performed in very poor neighborhoods. We consider work on slopes steeper than 50 degrees inherently unsafe. For urban work it is preferable to not have any cables on the roads. Therefore radio telemetric Opseis 5586 equipment was mobilized. This proved to be the right tool for the occasion, allowing safe and efficient operations, which with conventional cable telemetry would have been nearly impossible. Processing the data gave good to excellent results, proving that rough terrain as such is not an obstacle to producing high quality 3D seismic. A video, recorded during these operations will be shown at the congress and this article provides additional information about this unique experience.

AB - ABSTRACT: Exploring for hydrocarbons in thrust-belt areas is one of the great challenges for seismic imaging. The Llanos foothills of Colombia combine both difficult mountainous terrain and complex geology. Application of appropriate technology in both the acquisition and processing of the data has led to a risk reduction in the exploration phase of the trend and greater confidence in the reserve base in the exploitation phase. Early seismic data (pre 1991) show large anticlinal structures, but do not permit accurate subsurface prediction. A significant effort over the past three years using state of the art acquisition and processing imaging technology has resulted in substantial improvements in the quality of the seismic data. Standard processing techniques are used for stacking the data; the imaging strategy includes both post-stack and pre-stack time and depth migrations. However, integration between acquisition, processing and interpretation, as well as between BPX staff and its contractors, is key to improving the data quality. By reviewing the procedures on a line from the Cupiagua field discovered in 1992, the differences that the new imaging techniques have made will be shown.

AB - ABSTRACT: Chevron has several years of experience with processing seismic data from the eastern Andes and other overthrust areas where data quality has ranged from fair to non-existent in the past. These are areas where topography is often severe, near-surface velocity and geology are highly variable, and operating conditions are difficult. Data acquisition is expensive and in many cases costs have not been justified. However, recent processing projects have given encouragement that better and more cost-effective data quality can be achieved. Better data quality is related to several factors;-Data acquisition parameters must be chosen properly and acquisition must be done according to plan.-Compensating for the effects of the near-surface on reflection travel times is very important and must be done correctly for good data quality.-The processing datum should involve a minimum bulk static shift and should be CDP-consistent.-Velocity analysis and residual statics need to be done in ways that maximize signal/noise; multiple iterations may be necessary.-Finally, shortcoming in any of the steps leads to inferior data quality; careful quality control and interpreter input must be emphasized.
