AB - ABSTRACT: The Santander Massif is a broad basement uplift, limited on both flanks by two major reverse faults. More internal faults, however, though very steeply dipping, are normal faults and limit sedimentary half-grabens. Much of the Neogene fault pattern is inherited from a Jurassic extensional event. The Neogene extensional deformation regime of the massif's internal parts is accounted for by a vertical uplift with an outward directed spread component, due to the fan array of its faults. This model is modified for a narrow, elongated uplift at Malaga, where the space problems created by the heave of a rock volume above downward curved faults have been overcome by the collapse of marginal synclines.

AB - ABSTRACT: The Romeral faults are closely associated to a major syncline at the western foothills of the Central Cordillera in which the Cretaceous sedimentary and volcanic rocks are deeply infolded and which separates the central parts of the Cordillera from a narrow basement cored antiform in the Cauca valley. Structural relief of these structures amounts to various kilometers. The syncline is divided into 3 or more, consistently east facing imbricate sheets which are faulted against the two adjacent basement antiforms. Deformations within the infolded rock units manifest themselves by 1) a westerly domain, characterised by a subvertical elongation and by 2) an easterly domain, dominated by a N-S elongation which increase in intensity toward the Cordillera's internal parts. These two deformation domains imply the fabrics of fault related intrusive rocks as well, confirming their synkinematic emplacement. Compressional deformations give only local rise to a rock cleavage. The above mentioned features are most adequately accounted for by a vertical uplift model, in which crystalline lamellae rose along steeply dipping and slightly divergent fault planes, thereby giving rise to the interleafed nature of the basement-cover contact. This deformation model envisages further the existence of collapse structures at the crest parts of the cordillera.

AB - ABSTRACT: The coal resources of Colombia were analyzed and grouped in several regions following economic and political divisions. These regions are named: Atlantic, Pacific, Central, "Llanero" Piedmont and Amazonic Regions. The smallest areas were called "coal subzones". They correspond to localities within one or more Departments, named municipios, where fifty of the subzones which were grouped in fourteen "coal zones" were recognised. A compilation of geological information about quality and quantity of coals was elaborated. As a result total coal resources of 41.743 million tons were calculated, based on explored areas with geological formations containing coal, comprising only 16% of the total potential area. The coal quality ranges from lignite to anthracite; the main coal types range from bituminous to sub-bituminous to be used as thermic and coking coals. The coal basic reserves were calculated in 7.700 millions. This amount will last for one hundred years if the production rate is 30 million tons a year.

AB - ABSTRACT: The lower Cretaceous Yavi, Caballos, and Hondita Formations have been recently studied. Although these studies furnish valuable information, they are controversial. In this paper we tackle the existing discrepancies in correlation and stratigraphic nomenclature. The abandonment of recently proposed units is recommended and attention is called towards the original definitions, according to standard stratigraphic regulations. In addition, biostratigraphical differences have been identified and discussed. They are ascribed to the poorly known ranges of the fossils reported.

AB - ABSTRACT: The Colombian Jurassic consists predominantly of continental and volcaniclastic materials which accumulated and were conserved in an elongated basin, trending SSW-NNE, with a longitudinal extension from northern Ecuador to western Venezuela. The sedimentary record reflects a slow and unequal accumulation within supracontinental troughs which developed in regions constituting presently the Upper and Middle Magdalena Valley, the Eastern Cordillera, the Perija and Merida ranges, the Guajira peninsula and the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. This infilling occurred during numerous tectonic events and registers taphrogenic depressions, short-lived and local marine ingressions, subaerial volcanic eruptions, meso-and hypabissal intrusions and contact-metamorphic events, accompanied by the formation of skarn. These events are interpreted as an expression of extensive tectonics which affected the northwestern corner of South America during the Triassic and Jurassic, accompanying the opening of the northern Atlantic ocean.

AB - ABSTRACT: The concept of entropy may be defined as the probability that a given event can exist as a certain state information theory. This aleatory attribute of entropy is useful in the information theory, and can be used to determine sediment sorting (0.0 = perfect sorting; 1.0 = poor sorting). Entropy procedures were applied to the grain size distribution data from a litoral zone of the northern Colombian coast: the so called Cienaga Platform. The values obtained, for well sorted sediments, may be grouped into three zones, with different degrees of sorting. The differences among these groups may be explained as the product of transport and sedimentation processes, due to: local currents, wave direction, exchange of water masses between the Cienaga Grande and the sea, and influence of fresh water currents that flow into the area.

AB - ABSTRACT: The planktonic foraminiferal zone of Dicarinella concavata has been found in the Cucaita Member of the Conejo Formation which is exposed along the western portion of the section Tunja-Cucaita (Boyaca Province, central Eastern Cordillera, Colombia). The presence of this zone indicates Late Coniacian age. In the western Thetys realm (Gulf coastal plain, Caribbean Sea, Trinidad), however, the Dicarinella concavata zone supposedly extends into the Lower Santonian.
