LA - LANGUAGE: English AB - ABSTRACT: The Central Andean Terrane is an Early Paleozoic metavolcanoclastic - metapelitic belt which extends from the Central Andes of Colombia to northern Peru. A section across the Central Cordillera of Colombia is presented. Here the Central Andean Terrane consists mainly of amphibolitic schists and graphitic schists which range from greenschist facies to epidote-amphibolite facies. The mineral assemblages depict one prograde metamorphic event. Schists are isoclinally folded and toward the western margin of the Central Andean Terrane foliation is transposed. This transposition is probably related to overthrusting of the Amaime Terrane, which lies west of the Central Andean Terrane. Major and trace element geochemistry reveal two distinct sources for the Central Andean Terrane's protolith: an intra-oceanic island arc and a continental margin. The accretion and metamorphism of the Central Andean Terrane took place in Late Silurian-Early Devonian time. Based on current Paleozoic paleogeographic reconstructions, two tectonic evolution models for the Central Andean Terrane are here presented. LA - LANGUAGE: English AB - ABSTRACT: The oblique convergence between the South American and Caribbean plates in NW Colombia has resulted in two accretionary terranes, the San Jacinto and Sinu foldbelts. Each foldbelt exhibits a characteristic, but different maturation history. The differences are the result of temporal variations in the tectonic framework of the two foldbelts. These temporal variations resulted in significant differences in their time-temperature histories. Thermal and geochemical models were developed for the Tolu area in order to illustrate the differences in hydrocarbon maturation between the San Jacinto and Sinu foldbelts. In the San Jacinto foldbelt, the generation of hydrocarbons started in the Paleocene (57 Ma) and continued until the present, generating hydrocarbons ranging from oil to overmature gas, depending on the depth of burial of the Late Cretaceous-Eocene marine shales. In the Sinu foldbelt, hydrocarbon generation started in the Pliocene (4 Ma.) and continued until present; the hydrocarbons generated range in composition from biogenic gas to overmature gas, depending on the depth of burial of the Oligocene-Early Pliocene marine and marginal marine shales. The diagenesis of the Miocene shales within the Sinu foldbelt is dominated by the transformation of smectite to chlorite via mixed-layer chlorite/smectite (C/S). Changes in the expandability and ordering of the C/S correspond to changes in temperature due to burial. The appearance of C/S corrensite at a vitrinite reflectance value of 0.5 is a thermal indicator that marks the onset of hydrocarbon generation in the Sinu foldbelt.
