AB - ABSTRACT: The Pacific shoreline of Colombia is 1300 km long. It is bounded by the Panamanian border to the North at Lat 7 degrees 13'N, Long 77 degrees 49'W and to the South by the Mataje river at the Ecuadorian border, Lat 1 degrees 36'N, Long 74 degrees 01'W. Two sharply different geomorphologic provinces comprise the coastline. The northernmost 375 km from Panama to Cabo Corrientes are dominated by steep cliffs, which only host beaches and alluvial plains at the interior of major bays. The remaining 995 km to the Mataje River are marked by an alluvial prism which the fines a long chain of barrier islands. The main controls on the cliff coast are imposed by the resistant lithologies which are not significantly modified by the coastal and subaerial processes. In contrast in the alluvial coast, the high tidal range and the river discharges are the main factors modifying the alluvial prism. Due to its geologic and geomorphologic characteristics the high mountainous coast is less affected by coastal erosion than the low clastic coast. As a result the main evidences of coastline retreat are found along the low coast. The main causes of erosion are thought to be coastal subsidence and sea level rise. The synthesis of this evaluation can be expressed in terms of a percentage as follows. - Shoreline segments with high erosion: 203 km 16%; - Shoreline segments which are accreting: 24 km 2%; - Shoreline segments which show little or no change: 1073 km 82%.

AB - ABSTRACT: The Caribbean Colombian coast is 1700 Km long, from Castilletes in the Venezuela border to Cabo Tiburon in the Panama border. This coastal study included geomorphological mapping and a qualitative evaluation of the accretion-erosion tendency at a scale of 1:100.000. Sixteen (16) types of geomorphological units were differentiated. They were associated to both low and elevated types of coastal/line, and also the most relevant features associated to them. In order of importance the low coastal type has the following geomorfological units: coastal plains, alluvian plains, sabkhas, flood zones, mangrove swamps, coastal lagoons, old beaches-, dune fields, actual beaches, spits, barrier beaches, and coral platforms and barriers. Among the high expression types there are the following units: hills and mountains, high wave cut platforms, marine terraces and yardangs. Taking into account the physiographical, geographical, geological, geomorphological aspect and the coast variability, the Colombian Caribbean littoral was divided in eight (8) zones: The Guajira peninsula, Sierra Nevada of Santa Marta, The ancient Magdalena delta, Central Caribbean, Cartagena-Punta de Piedra, Punta de Piedra-Punta Caribana, Uraba Golf area and Darien coastal zone.

AB - ABSTRACT: Five specimens of Pachyrhizodontidae family of fishes, found in Turonian beds of the Upper Magdalena Valley in Colombia, are studied. Four of these specimens are referred to a new species of the Goulmimichthys genus: G. gasparinii, and the fifth of them is assigned to a new species of the Pachyrhizodus genus: P. etayoi. Some characteristics of these new species differ from the suborder Pachyrhizodontoidei diagnosis established by Forey (1977): in both Colombian species the five infraorbitals are independent; in the G. gasparinii species an ossification between dermethmoid and premaxilla is present; in P. etayoi the only exposed vertebral centrum is not pierced by notochordal canal. The study of this Colombian material extends the paleogeographical distribution of the family in the Turonian time, which was hitherto restricted to the Europe and North Africa region. Furthermore, it confirms the presence of this family in Upper Cretaceous beds in South America.

AB - ABSTRACT: In addition to the Eastern Caribbean Terrane, which includes sediments of the Guajira region, deposited on sialic crust, the Caribbean region of Colombia includes two extensive areas which appear to have had totally different geologic evolutions: (1) one in the northwestern portion, covering the coastal belt between Barranquilla and Chigorodo, with sediments deposited over oceanic crust, which include abundant Cenozoic turbidites, Paleogene coral reefs and many diapiric folds, which has been named Western Caribbean Terrane, and (2) another one in the southeastern portion, which corresponds to the Andean Terrane, and comprises a peneplane affected by a transgression during Oligocene time, which generated epicontinental sediments, followed by a regression during the Late Cenozoic, located south of the Oca Fault. These two areas are bounded by a SSW-NNE strike-slip fault, altered by the N-S Cauca Fault close to the township of Cienaga de Oro.
