AB - ABSTRACT: Approximately 300 m of fluvial channel, crevasse-splay, floodplain and lake sediments accumulated in the Middle Magdalena basin of central Colombia from early Paleocene to late Miocene. Core and well-log studies show that these strata are packaged in 70 to 250 m-thick cyclic alternations of channel and crevasse-dominated to floodplain and lake- dominated successions reflecting regular variations in regionally changing A/S (accommodation-to-sediment supply) ratio.Seismic reflection profiles show a similar alternation of seismic facies at lower vertical resolution than well logs. Seven seismic facies calibrated with sedimentary facies are defined by geometric configuration (e.g., shingled, concave-down, mounded) and reflection character (e.g., high/low lateral continuity and high/low reflection amplitude). Within seismic facies packages, systematic changes in clinoform geometries depict the evolution of landforms that occur in long-term stratigraphic cycles. Mapping seismic facies reveals approximate sedimentologic facies distributions within six intervals.Our seismic interpretation method integrates the strengths and minimizes inherent weaknesses of data types. Well-log data provide high vertical resolution; seismic data provide low vertical but high lateral resolution. A critical part of the method predicts seismic character (geometric configurations and reflection attributes) from the facies tracts and stratigraphic architecture interpreted from well logs. Also, ties between data types emphasize stratigraphic intervals rather than bounding surfaces.
