AB - ABSTRACT: A species flock of 14 species of Cyprideis is identified in the Solimoes/Pebas Formation of Miocene age in the Upper Amazon basin. The study embraces parts of Peru, Colombia and Brazil. These 14 species, many of which have been previously consigned to other genera, are shown to belong to Cyprideis and each species is diagnosed and illustrated. A phylogeny is postulated based upon the evolution of two distinct lineages, one ornate, the other smooth. The high diversity of the genus is attributed to evolution in a stable, isolated body of saline water throughout the Miocene.

AB - ABSTRACT: The study area is located in the central part of the Eastern Cordillera, one of the three mountain ranges of the Colombian Andes in the northwestern corner of South America. The methodology used in this research comprised stratigraphic and geological map analysis, seismic interpretation, the construction of two regional cross sections AA' and BB', a regional interpretation which includes an evolutionary model for the Jurassic to the present and finally an evaluation of the hydrocarbon potential. The original rift basin configuration in the area comprised a full graben in the Arcabuco Region and a half graben in Tunja and Sogamoso Regions. Synrift deposits were a thick Upper Triassic (?)-Upper Jurassic non-marine sequence of redbeds unconformably overlying the Cambrian-Lower Carboniferous (?) metamorphic, igneous and sedimentary rocks. The thermal subsidence phase during the latest Jurassic and the Cretaceous resulted in the accumulation of a thick sequence of shallow marine strata. Six major depositional cycles of transgression and regression were developed during the Late Jurassic (Tithonian)-early Paleocene. The erosion of late Maastrichtian coastal plain deposits and the unconformable foreland accumulation of early Paleocene nonmarine clastics due to the accretion of the Western Cordillera mark the beginning of basin inversion and the progressive development of the Eastern Cordillera. Tertiary deformation of the Arcabuco Region initiated the thick-skinned inversion of the old graben. It produced broad folding within a regional pop-up structure formed by slip reversal on the high-angle basement-involved, northwest-and southeast-dipping Boyaca and La Salina-Landazuri normal fault systems. The northwest and southeast bipolar vergence is interpreted as a mirror effect of buttressing at both borders of the graben. The Tunja and Sogamoso Regions were originally part of a single, east-dipping half graben. The former was the footwall of the Boyaca normal fault and the latter was the hanging wall of the old, northwest-dipping normal fault system underlying the Guicaramo thrust fault system. The broad folds to the east were probably a result of buttressing against the footwall of the Guicaramo fault system and the Quetame Massif. The backthrusting is probably due to the forward propagation of the footwall shortcut Soapaga Fault. The Floresta Massif and its southwest plunge into the Sabana de Bogota dominate the Tunja Region. It is characterized by northwest-dipping, thin-skinned structures which detach in shaly units of the Lower and Upper Cretaceous and are developed in the hanging wall and footwall of the northwest-dipping, basement involved Soapaga and Boyaca faults, respectively. Fault-bend and fault-propagation folds are dominant, except for in the southern part where detachment folds are more common, due the presence of both salt and thicker shales. The relatively shallow thin-skinned faults in the Tunja Region are interpreted to root in basement along the old normal fault zone. The Sogamoso Region comprises highly faulted and folded Cretaceous and Tertiary sequences to the west and broad and elongated folds and rare faults involving mostly the Lower Cretaceous to the east. The northern part is dominated by northwest-vergent thin-skinned deformation and the southern part by northwest and southeast-vergent thin-skinned deformation and possible positive flower structures. The progressive development of the Eastern Cordillera involved five cycles of accumulation and deformation between late Maastrichtian-Holocene times. The first two (late Maastrichtian to early Paleocene and early Paleocene to middle Eocene) represent the pre-Andean deformation and occurred as a result of the accretion of the Western Cordillera, the South American-Caribbean plate convergence and the accretion of the Panama arc. The last three represent the Andean deformation which uplifted the Eastern Cordillera as a result of the collision of the Choco Terrane with South America in the middle Miocene. Three peaks of deformation occurred: the first during the early-middle Eocene pre-Andean deformation, and the other during the early-middle Miocene and late Miocene-early Pliocene Andean deformation. The hydrocarbon potential in the central part of the Eastern Cordillera is mainly associated with thin-skinned fault-bend, fault-propagation and detachment folds. Their hydrocarbon potential is related to their preservation during the different pulses of deformation, their relation to different pulses of hydrocarbon generation-migration and the quality and quantity of the involved reservoirs. The hydrocarbon potential for thick-skinned structures is considered low because the main Upper Cretaceous and Tertiary reservoirs have been eroded.

AB - ABSTRACT: The emerald composition of the Campos Verdes mining district (Goias state) was determined by the infrared spectroscopy with Fourier transform (FTIR) and inductive plasm spectrometry (ICP-MS). The results show that the emerald from this region is characterized by relatively high total iron proportions and weight loss ignition, combined with little amount of alkalis (Na (super +) >>Cs (super +) >Li (super +) ). The infrared spectrum is defined by type II-H (sub 2) O vibrations. The integration of chemical data with physical and optical properties makes possible to differentiate the Campos Verdes emerald from those Pakistani gems extracted in the mines of the Mingora, Gujarkili e Makhad, as well as from emeralds from Franqueira (Spain), Itabira (Brazil), Colombia, and from those produced in laboratories.

AB - ABSTRACT: Floodplains have been preferred for human settlements by farmers and city planners due to water availability, agricultural, recreational advantages, etc. No flood control measures are normally implemented in Colombia so when floods come there are important economic losses and sometimes loss of human life. In Colombia no flood control regulation exists. There exist unclear and ambiguous lacking of government policies, hydrological, hydraulic and geomorphological criteria that otherwise would permit an adequate utilization of these lands. This paper points out on the necessity to establish adequate policies to use floodplains involving scientific considerations.
