AB - ABSTRACT: In the neighborhood of the Primary School of Jutua, 6 kms to the NNW from the town of Soata (Boyaca) the remains of some Pleistocene mammals have been collected. In spite of the not so good quality of the fossils, which prevent a clear determination at the species level, even in some cases at genus level, this collection is important, because it includes two taxons not previously reported from Colombia: Caninae indet. and ?Neochoerus (Hydrochoeridae). The discovery of this fauna clarifies the origin of the Soata fossils; they stem from two different places: Portugalete and Jutua, SSE and NNE from Soata, respectively, some 9 kms apart.

AB - ABSTRACT: The eastern border of the Floresta Massif is affected by two major reverse faults which relieve each other in the area of the present study. Each fault is characterized by a proper structural style. The strata around the northern Paz de Rio fault display "reverse-drag" relations, as the sediments of the footwall block define a major wedge against the fault, and the hangingwall block is affected by a marginal syncline. The southern Corrales Fault, however, relates to a bending and inversion of the massif's eastern flank, without resembling a typical drape-induced detachment, however. Folding of this eastern flank produced probably some excess length of the sedimentary cover which was consumed within a small anticlinorium to the east of the massif. This anticlinorium is separated further east by faulted blocks or mesas from a more internal, folded zone of the Pisba high.

AB - ABSTRACT: Modal analyses of thin sections from the Guadalupe and Palmichal Groups, and from the Arenisca El Morro Formation, has revealed the petrographic differences between them. Particularly the sandstones from the latter unit bear metamorphic rock fragments that indicate changes in the source area. The textural features enabled calculations of porosity loss for each lithological unit studied. Values of compactional and cementational porosity loss together with the compaction index point towards compaction as the main proxy in obliteration of primary porosity. Significant cementation occurred only locally, except in the Arenisca Dura Formation, where high cement percentages are not unusual. The arenita intermedia of the Palmichal Group and the Arenisca de El Morro Formation exhibit the best petrophysical attributes to be viewed as potential hydrocarbon reservoirs or aquifers.

AB - ABSTRACT: This work deals with the general features of the Jurassic in the Norandean Realm (Ecuador, Colombia and Venezuela); more details about its characteristics are given for the northern portion of the Upper Magdalena Valley selected area for the excursion prepared with occasion of the "IV Field Conference" of the IGCP-UNESCO Project 322 Correlation of Jurassic Events in South America, October 29-November 4, 1995, in Bogota. The Jurassic in this part of South America consists mainly of terrestrial and volcanogenic units that include different types of pyroclastics, effusives and thick intervals of red beds, as well as restricted marine deposits. Typical fossil scarcity, generalized incomplete stratigraphic sequences, difficult outcrop conditions and absence of detailed works have permitted to visualize only a diffuse scenario, which paleogeographically and paleotectonically can be interpreted as been the result of rifting processes, compression/subduction with main volcanic areas and associated back-arc basins, or oblique translation of exotic "suspected" terrains. However, the state of knowledge supports more the first postulate invocating a supposed separation of North and South America leading to the opening of the Protocaribbean and of distensional supracrustal depressions, that permitted the accumulation of aulacogen similar successions including short time sea ingressions, like those registered in the Payande, Bata, Morrocoyal and Jipi, Caju and Cuisa Formations. Recent findings of palynomorph bearing metacherts and metaturbidites (as green schists) indicating Early Jurassic age and outcropping in the SW extreme of the Cordillera Real of Ecuador, as well as xenoliths containing Late Triassic bivalves in the Zamora Batholith of the same cordillera, confirm the existence there of a deep Paleopacific ocean, a fact of great relevance for the evaluation of the several paleogeographic models proposed by precedent authors and makes possible the presence of corresponding rocks on the western flank of the Colombian Central Cordillera.

AB - ABSTRACT: Fuzzy Logic System based in the fuzzy set theory is a powerful tool in analysis and processing data of mass movement phenomena, that is it able to simultaneously handle numerical data (got it in field work and laboratory test) and linguistic information (experts opinion). Mass movement takes place due to interaction of several factors (e.g., geological, geotechnical and environmental). This work presents application of SLD to analysis and assessment of the lithology, weathering, terrain moisture and cinematic condition for each one of the main scarp sector of "El Caminante" landslide (Chiquiza, Boyaca). The results obtained agree with actual landslide conditions, in which the lithology and structural attitude are the factors conditioning susceptibility degree to mass movement phenomena.

AB - ABSTRACT: On November 13th of 1985, the city of Armero was destroyed by a debris flow generated by a reactivation of the Nevado del Ruiz Volcano, located in the middle third of the Central Cordillera of Colombia. Further studies have indicated that the flow occurred in at least three main pulses, each one with different hydrodynamic characteristics, as was observed by the survivors of the tragedy. Landsat TM 5 data processing was carried out in subscenes taken before and after the debris flow sedimentation. False color composites were generated and combined with a digital terrain model and the geological information available, in order to create perspective views for visualizing the catastrophe magnitude and the flow characteristics. Taking advantage of Landsat TM 5 images high spectral resolution, a detailed interpretation of its three principal pulses was carried out, in order to improve the previous photointerpretations elaborated with panchromatic aerial photographs. Despite its low spatial and temporal resolution, Landsat TM is a remote sensing powerful tool, which offers plenty of applications for hazard assessment of catastrophic lahars. By the time when the eruption of Nevado del Ruiz triggered the Armero debris flow, the access to Landsat TM 5 data would have played a very important role in that disaster's mitigation.

AB - ABSTRACT: The El Mochuelo creek micro-basin, located southwest of Bogota, is occupied by Dona Juana landfills, where a rotational and translational mass movement with garbage flow produced lobes toward its base in September 27 of 1997. The rotational and translation slide contained approximately 800.000 cubic meters of garbage, and runs towards the Tunjuelo River, the greatest fluvial basin, southeast of the Sabana de Bogota. Dona Juana landfills are being used since November 1st of 1988 and are used until August 14th of 2000, assuming that on the two zones, all industrial, domestic and hospital wastes from Bogota and some neighboring towns, will amount 5000 tons average daily. Based on aerial photographs before and after the rotational slide, secondary information and fieldwork control, a description on the geology, geomorphology, morphologic and dynamic aspects and stability evolution of the landfills and analysis about the risk in the micro-basin have been done. Therefore this region does not perform the specifications established by international organizations for being used as a landfill; besides this generates dangerous zones for environmental stability.

AB - ABSTRACT: Benthonic Foraminifera in the >150 mu m size-fraction were analysed from the uppermost 2 m of Cores ODP677B (1.202 degrees N-83.737 degrees W) and TR163-38 (1.337 degrees S-81.583 degrees W) from the Panama Basin, Colombian Pacific. A large seasonality in the organic carbon flux to the seafloor is suggested for Core ODP677B, located in the mesotrophic central Panama Basin-, for the last 30 ka. Maximum values are recorded at 10.5 and 21 ka and 25.5 and 30.5 ka. Seasonality in the organic carbon flux to the seafloor is low and homogeneous for Core TR163-38, located in the southern eutrophic region of the Panama Basin-except for dysoxic-anoxic conditions between 10.5 and 18 ka (the deglaciation) when productivity was intensified. These cores do respond to a productivity latitudinal gradient with similar or lower values in the north (Core ODP677B) than today's for the last glacial. Past productivity was larger during deglaciation south of the equator (Core TR163-38). Possible mechanisms to explain these trends are: (1) intensification of the Equatorial Divergence and Peruvian upwelling systems, (2) a more efficient utilization of nutrients, (3) variations in the chemical composition of upwelling waters, and (4) migration of the Equatorial Divergence.
