AB - ABSTRACT: Development of the Colombian Middle Magdalena Valley Basin (MMVB) was determined by late Cretaceous-early Eocene uplift of the Central Cordillera to the west, and subsequent transferal of deformation to the Eastern Cordillera to the east. These phases are separated in the tectono-stratigraphic record by a major unconformity, the Middle Magdalena Valley unconformity (MMVU). Paleocene coastal to alluvial facies underneath the MMVU were deposited in a foreland basin coupled to Central Cordillera kilometer-scale uplift. The middle Eocene to Neogene continental strata that onlap the MMVU document transformation of the MMVB into an interior basin due to Eastern Cordillera deformation recorded by growth strata in seismic lines and changing provenance and paleoflow patterns. Exhumation histories of the MMVB bounding ranges are further constrained by apatite-fission-track and vitrinite reflectance thermochronology and volcanic ash chronology. This study indicates that the MMVB is fundamentally related to evolution of the entire Andean margin of South America.

AB - ABSTRACT: It is widely accepted that the thickened oceanic crust of the Caribbean plate, its basaltic accreted margins, and accreted mafic terranes in northwestern South America represent the remnants of a single ca. 90 Ma oceanic plateau. We review geologic, geochemical, and paleomagnetic evidence that suggests that the Caribbean-Colombian oceanic plateau in fact represents the remnants of two different oceanic plateaus, both dated as ca. 90 Ma. The first of these plateaus, the Caribbean Plateau, formed ca. 90 Ma in the vicinity of the present-day Galapagos hotspot. Northeastward movement of the Farallon plate meant that this plateau collided with the proto-Caribbean arc and northwestern South America <10 m.y. after the plateau's main phase of formation. Paleomagnetic evidence suggests that the second of these plateaus, the Gorgona Plateau, formed at 26 degrees -30 degrees S, possibly at the site of the present-day Sala y Gomez hotspot. Over the next approximately 45 m.y., this plateau was carried progressively northeastward on the Farallon plate and collided in the middle Eocene with the proto-Andean subduction zone in northwestern South America. The recognition of a second ca. 90 Ma Pacific oceanic plateau strengthens the link between plateau formation and global oceanic anoxic events.

AB - ABSTRACT: Founded on the assumption of surface consistency, reflection-based residual-statics correct for the time distortions in seismic data arising from rapid near-surface variations. The assumption is founded on a vertical-path, ray-theoretical model of wave propagation in the near surface. Since ray theory does not hold for models with rapid spatial variation, we resort to finite-difference modeling to study the influence of wave-theoretical aspects on the character of time distortions and the validity of the surface-consistency assumption. For near-surface models that are admittedly simple and idealized, we find that the character of time distortions is highly influenced by a wavefront-healing phenomenon whose strength depends on the ratio of the size of the frequency-dependent Fresnel zone to the wavelength of lateral variation in the model. As experienced in practice, the quality of the surface-consistency assumption degrades with increasing ratio of spread-length to reflector depth. The validity of the assumption is best for longer-wavelength anomalies in a weathering layer that is relatively thin. Wavefront healing, however, limits significantly the time-distortion problem where the weathering layer is relatively thick. Interestingly, wavefront healing also helps to reduce the size of the time-distortion problem when the velocity in the surface layer is large relative to that in the layers beneath, such as in areas of permafrost.

AB - ABSTRACT: The Eastern Cordillera of Colombia is considered to be the result of compression and uplift during the late Miocene-Pliocene Andean orogeny. Nevertheless, detailed mapping carried out on a portion of the fold belt exposed along the western flank of the Eastern Cordillera suggests that deformation began in late Paleocene-early Eocene time, in the form of a west-vergent, forward-propagating fold-and-thrust belt. Several structures related to this event remain concealed beneath the late Paleocene-late Eocene unconformity, and synkinematic sediments are preserved locally within some of these thrust sheets. The relief generated during this deformational episode constrained the depositional axis of late Eocene fluvial sediments to run along the present-day crestal zone of the Eastern Cordillera. Onlapping basal Miocene molassic sediments on tilted middle Miocene fluvial deposits suggest that a series of seismically delineated intercutaneous wedges located at the thrust front formed in late Miocene time. These structures mark the onset of the Andean deformational episode. Thrusting polarity reversed during the latter event, that is, toward the hinterland, and Paleogene structures were reactivated. Additionally, the late Paleocene-early Eocene unconformity surface was folded and incorporated into north-plunging folds, and Cretaceous extensional faults were inverted. As a result, the Eastern Cordillera developed its present pop-up, doubly vergent fold-belt geometry, flanked by thick molassic sequences that document the Miocene-Pliocene Andean orogeny. Regionally, the latest Campanian-Maastrichtian uplift of the Central Cordillera, Paleocene-early Eocene thrusting in the Middle Magdalena Valley and along the western flank of the Eastern Cordillera, and ultimately inversion and major uplift of the entire Eastern Cordillera in late Miocene-Pliocene time, attests to the eastward propagation of deformation from the Central toward the Eastern Cordillera. Kinematically, the driving element of deformation would have been the obliquely accreting western terranes of the Central and Western Cordilleras and the Panama arc. These transferred their easterly component of convergence to the Eastern Cordillera through a basal intracrustal detachment.
