AB - ABSTRACT: The geomorphic structure of Central cordillera in Antioquia department of Colombia consists of a mosaic of first order landforms: uplifted etchplains, regional scraps, linear and branched canyons and the "Aburra valley as an intramontane basin. Etchplains and regional scarps are spatially arranged as stepped patterns; lineal and branched canyons correspond to the youngest first order generation in the Colombian Central range and they are modelled simultaneously with the final Colombian north cordillera uplift. The Aburra valley is a unique type relief, not only on the northern of the Central cordillera but for all the Colombian Andes. The Santa Rosa de Osos etchplain is distinguished from the others stepped etchplains by the preservation of old (Tertiary) relief types, relief elements, landforms and soils.

AB - ABSTRACT: The field trip of the Medellin-Ciudad Bolivar-Arquia river route, within the Antioquia Department, enables a general view of the geological features of the northernmost Central and Western Cordilleras, particularly the geological characteristics and structural position of different lithostratigraphic units, relative to the main faults systems that mark the boundary between a continental environment to the east and an oceanic environment to the west, and their incidence on the tectonic models formulated for this area of Colombia. The Medellin-Ciudad Bolivar section between the western flank of the Central Cordillera and the eastern flank of the Occidental Cordillera, near the Cauca-Patia depression, shows the spatial-structural relationships between the Paleozoic metamorphic rocks and the Mesozoic oceanic rocks along the Silvia-Pijao an the Cauca-Almaguer fault systems. In the Cauca river canyon, between the Arquia river and municipality of La Pintada, and in the western flank of the Central Cordillera, between La Pintada and Medellin, the Paleozoic medium pressure (Arquia Complex) and low pressure (Sinifana metasediments and Cajamarca complex) metamorphic rocks are separated tectonically from each other by Cretaceous oceanic volcano-sedimentary rocks (Quebradagrande Complex). These units are separated from west to east by the Cauca-Almaguer, Silvia-Pijao and San Jeronimo fault systems.

AB - ABSTRACT: This work was made inside the boundaries of the Rio Claro Mining Concession of SUMICOL S.A., in an area of 9 km (super 2) , located at the Southeast of the Antioquia Department in the eastern flank of the Central Cordillera. As result of the field observations and petrographic, geochemical, structural and lithologies analyses made by the authors, we propose the following geological model: The marbles of the Rioclaro Mining Concession, which are considered to be Paleozoic, were formed by primary deposition under a transitional environment. In the east part of the basin rich minerals in calcium with low continental contribution were deposited, while in the west part, due to temporary and physiographic variations of the paleobasin, intercalations of calcareous, dolomitic and quarzitic bodies were formed. These materials were subsequently affected by tectonometamorphic events during the Paleozoic and by the Palestina fault system in the Cretaceous, moving the highly pure marbles, initially located on the east, to the southwest by the principal trace of the Palestina fault. The principal evidences are the large amount of calcium oxide and the compositional difference between the calcareous materials limited by the Palestina fault inside the study area. In the south of such an structure there were found highly pure marbles with amounts of CaCO (sub 3) above 98% and oxides below 0.52%, while according to the regional geological model these materials should be on the east side of the marble body.

AB - ABSTRACT: Located in the western flank of the Central Cordillera of Colombia and having a thickness of approximately 750 m, the Upper Oligocene-Upper Miocene Amaga Formation is divided into two members: the Lower Member, presenting facies associations typical of braided and meandering rivers; and subdivided into Unit 1 and Unit 2, sequentially shows increase in preservation grade of geomorphic elements, sedimentary facies diversity and textural and chemical maturity of sandstone. Compositionally Unit 1 presents conglomeratic quartz arenites and Unit 2 presents well-sorted sub-lithic arenites associated to coal bearings. The Upper Member, presenting facies associations of meandering and braided rivers, is subdivided into Unit 3 and Unit 4. This member shows low geomorphic elements preservation grade, as well as a decrease in facies diversity and textural and chemical maturity of sandstone. Compositionally, this member holds volcanic clastic fragments and feldspatic-lithic arenites. These characteristics were used to define stratigraphic base level fluctuations, throughout which, it was possible to identify changes in the Accommodation space-Sediment supply (A/S) relationship. This relationship permitted the determination of three different sedimentation patterns characterized by: (1) High tectonic activity, with the low A/S relationship (Unit 1); (2) low tectonic activity and high climatic influence, with a moderate high A/S relationship (Unit 2) and (3) high tectonic activity, contemporaneous to Combia Formation Volcanism (Units 3 and 4), with the lowest A/S relationship.

AB - ABSTRACT: Colombian vegetation, at the ecological level of the biome, is reconstructed at the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) using two methods. A reconstruction of modern biomes shows that, for the majority of the sites, the pollen data accurately reflect the potential vegetation, even though much of the original vegetation has been transformed by agricultural practices. At 18 000 (super 14) C yr BP a generally cool and dry environment is reflected in biome assignments of cold mixed forests, cool evergreen forests and cool grassland/shrub, the latter extending to lower altitudes than presently recorded. Differential responses of the vegetation to climatic shifts are related to changes in moisture sources and the importance of edaphic control on the vegetation. Secondly, biomes at the LGM are also investigated by applying a vegetation model (BIOME-3) set to operate at CO (sub 2) levels of 200 ppmV and with climatic data from 12 meteorological stations that encompass a range of environments within Colombia. At lower altitudes it is apparent that moisture is the dominant control on driving vegetation change whereas temperature becomes more important at higher altitudes. The combined reconstruction of biome-scale vegetation dynamics in Colombia allows an understanding of the environmental controls on these to be developed that demonstrates the need to invoke different factors to explain the vegetation change rather than a uniform reduction in temperature or moisture. AB - ABSTRACT: This thesis work applies recently enhanced geophysical techniques with the purpose of assisting the management effort of detecting new prospecting zones in the Puerto Colon oil field. Currently, only the easier-to-produce hydrocarbons are being extracted; this thesis attempts to discover more about the Caballos formation characteristics in order to extract the harder-to-produce hydrocarbons. Acceptable matches have been found between the rockphysics laboratory measurements and the petrophysical properties estimated with seismic data. Well logs were used to guide the seismic calculations in the estimation of both porosity and gamma-ray response (from seismic attributes), and acoustic impedance (via seismic inversion) using a neural network approach. A probabilistic neural network (PNN) was applied because of three characteristics: a) mapping non-linear relationships between seismic and well log data; b) incrementing both accuracy and resolution when performing inversion, compared to conventional inversion (Sun, 2001); and using a mathematical interpolation scheme not implemented as a black box (Hampson et al., 2001; Masters, 1995; Specht, 1990, 1991). The elastic parameters Poisson and Vp/Vs ratio were identified as important to discriminate between good and low reservoir rock quality in the Caballos formation (Petrophysical Consulting Inc., 2000). Elastic inversion was applied to the seismic data to calculate these elastic parameters using the Portniaguine's algorithm (2003, personal communication). The inputs to the portniaguine's elastic inversion algorithm are three angle gather stacks (0 degrees -10 degrees , 11 degrees -20 degrees and 21 degrees -30 degrees ). The possibility of detecting the four genetical units of the Caballos Formation was evaluated using tuning analysis technique and instantaneous spectral analysis (ISA) (Castagna et al., 2003); no reflections from these units were detectable for the 4 millisecond sample rate seismic data available. Frequency cubes generated by applying ISA and partial offset stacks (near, middle and far offsets) proved to be useful techniques in creating external attributes used as input for the porosity and gamma-ray response estimation; additionally the 40 hertz frequency cube is very appropriate for the localization of the faulting area that limits the eastern side of the oil field. Finally, to evaluate the impact of the reservoir fluids in the seismic signature a fluid replacement modeling and preliminary amplitude versus offset analysis was performed. No substantial contribution of the fluids to the seismic signature was detected.
