  • original cloth, gilt lettering, tissue guarded, uncut, untrimmed, very clean internally, good condition, shelf wear, library book plate [scarce first edition]; [These engraving from The Naturalist's Library are among the very finest natural history miniatures ever produced., The Naturalist's Library was originally intended for everyone interested in natural history, not just the wealthy. Education in schools on natural history disciplines was increasing so Jardine’s small and affordable color plate books were ideal. Sir William Jardine (1800-1847) was a Scottish ichthyologist and ornithologist, who interacted regularly with colleagues in both fields as well as naturalists in other fields (e.g. Edward Lear, Prideaux John Selby, William Swainson). The Naturalists' Library encompasses 40 volumes produced over several decades and includes beautiful plates engraved after naturalist masters, John James Audubon, John Gould and Maria Sibylla Merian. William H. Lizars did most of the engravings (as well as the first ten plates in John James Audubon’s Double Elephant Folio edition of Birds of America) in steel rather than copper which accounts for the stunning intricacy of each image.] $145
