Melbourne Cup Day

Social Bowls every Wednesday & Friday (12.30pm start)
Executive Director: Ian Thomas Board Secretary: W. Trupke

FROM the BOARD:

Ian Thomas

Less than 40 days to Xmas. The Club has its Christmas Dinner Dance on Saturday 29th November – less than 14 days away. Hope to see you there – get a table or a place on a table booked and bring a plate to listen and dance to the Cash-Monroe-Presley Band.

Baguley Green – we have just had completed the repairs to the Frank & Isabelle Baguley Green – with the help of some 10 or more member helpers we managed to roll back the complete West side of the Green so that the contractors could get to the under surface which had sunk in places. Everything was completed in a day and the Green is “better” than ever. The repairs were paid for by our insurance.

Air-con: We are still looking at getting some air-conditioning in the Club rooms. It was over $10,000 to do the whole Club rooms so we are looking at doing one area at a time – this will provide, first and foremost an area where members can find instant relief on a hot day (or warmth on a cold day). If the opportunity arises we will be seeking a grant for the funding.

Office Computer: We have purchased a new “fast” computer for the Office. Once Terry Cheshire and Alan Cousens set it up (THANKS guys!!) we will have updated our software by some 5 years and have a speedy, smart, Internet and Wi-Fi (cordless) access from anywhere in the Club premises.

Barefoot Bowls: We are getting a heap of advertising flyers advertising the start of Barefoot Bowls from the 2nd Friday in January – what we will need is “walkers” to do a blanket letter-drop of the kilometre or so zone around the Club. Volunteers will be need so stay tuned early in December.

BAR ROSTER: Many thanks to our current Bar Manager, Ray Lambert. The Club derives a large income from our Bar sales and needs to run smoothly and efficiently – on a shared volunteer basis. There will be a Bar Roster compiled – the more volunteers the easier the load and the less time required by each person. Timing is the main hurdle for most people – so the Roster will list at least 2 members for each “shift”. Don’t worry if you don’t know what to do – training is provided, no heavy work required (no stacking just serving), and we can help you get a Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) Certificate. Approach Ian Thomas or Bob Darby if you can help.

Future Greens Committee: We NEED at least 4 or 5 members to form a Committee to begin exploring (and costing) the information we will need to plan the Club’s future Greens Setup. It is a big project but very important and needs to be started this year. Talk to Ian Thomas or any Board Member – otherwise we will have “speak” to you.

BV Greens Rating: Bowls Victoria did its official assessment of our 3 bowling greens for Pennant purposes – ALL received an “A” rating. Thanks to Daniel our Greenskeeper!

WELCOME to our new members – I might have already welcomed George Lansdown, Albert Jansen and Matthew Clark but we also now have John Standeven and Gloria Cumming. Say hello make them feel at home.

Ian Thomas, Executive Director

New Members

Members please welcome. and introduce yourself to our new members named above
From the President, Saturday Section (Ian Wilding)
The meanings of membership

At the most recent meeting of the Saturday Section Committee one of the committee members suggested that the Club's Monthly Newsletter warranted more support: one way to bolster the newsletter would be to include a report from the President. I agree. I have been remiss in not doing this sooner in my term as President – for that I apologise. So, here I am!

I thought it may be of interest to let members know of my views on club membership. Membership of any club affords one pleasure and it is always easy to pay one's membership dues and do nothing more than enjoy the activities provided. However, those activities have to be organised – we all know that but it is all too easy to say 'someone else will do it'. I believe that the benefits of membership are always enhanced by giving something back.

I have enjoyed and am continuing to enjoy my membership of Edithvale Bowling Club. Earlier this year I put my name forward for election as President of the Saturday Section because I thought that if I took a turn at doing the job I would be making a contribution to the running of the club and in so doing enhance my enjoyment of membership: that has proved to be the case. I have already got a better understanding of the operations of our club. I have already made mistakes but I shall learn from them. I have already benefited from the support and advice which is always available from Past Presidents (particularly the Immediate Past President).

I hope that what comes through in what I have said above is that it is the club's interests that are always paramount. I say that, not simply as a plug for volunteer office bearers but to encourage every member to contribute to the success of the club right from the outset by:

- following the Members Code of Conduct,

- participating enthusiastically in social games,

- striving to reach the highest level of performance in our Club Championships and

- proudly representing the club in pennant matches, whenever and wherever selected.

Membership means the sharing of common interests, in our case playing the game of bowls, and it also provides opportunities for companionship, for social activities and to have fun.

Many of us have children and grandchildren - and we love them! Why? Well here is an example! A mother was trying hard to get the tomato sauce out of the bottle. During her struggle the phone rang so she asked her 4-year-old daughter to answer the phone. “Mummy can’t come to the phone to talk to you right now. She’s hitting the bottle”.

Enjoy your membership and good bowling. Ian

Backs  Hips  Knees.    O’ that Pain

If you are one that is suffering it is not funny. At the moment we seem to be more like a footy club than a bowling club with Eric Viney (Knee), Ian Thomas (Back), John Clark (Back), Max King (Too many wonky joints to list) and quite a few more that soldier on come what may. lets get rid of those walking sticks and back on the green.

I have tried to make contact with James O’Brien with little success so I am unable to give a report but our thoughts are with you James.

Bob Gherardin is in hospital as I write this report. He was unwell and admitted to hospital Sunday 16 November and is currently having tests but reports are that he should be home in a day or two. We wish you a speedy recovery Bob.

Nice to see Wayne Clarke at the club of a Friday enjoying a glass of the amber fluid with his friends.

“A LOT CAN BE LEARNED from the NOAH STORY”

  1. Don’t miss the boat

  2. Remember we are all in the same boat

  3. Plan ahead. It wasn’t raining when Noah was building the ark

  4. Stay fit – When you’re 60+years old, someone may ask you to do something big.

  5. Don’t listen to critics – just get on with the job that needs doing.

  6. Build your future on high ground.

  7. For safety’s sake travel in pairs.

  8. Speed isn’t always an advantage; snails were on board with the cheetahs.

  9. When your stressed float awhile.

  10. Remember the ark was built by amateurs, the Titanic by professionals.

  11. No matter the storm, when you’re doing what’s right, there’s always a rainbow waiting
