Disadvantages of Double Hull Design

• In one of the study of comparison of single and double hull tankers, the following were clearly observed viz:
• Oil outflow and considerations of hydrostatic balance following collisions and grounding.
• The difficulties of salvaging a double hulled vessel due to flooding and lost buoyancy following a grounding incident.
• The intact and damaged stability of double hulled tankers was also questioned, due to concerns over the raised centre of gravity associated with double bottom tanks and the greater free surfaces of wide tanks.
