1.1Overview of OpenScape Office HX

OpenScape Office HX is a unified communications application for HiPath 3000 systems. The application is based on a Linux server PC and works only in combination with a HiPath 3000 system. For this reason, OpenScape Office HX is always released in conjunction with a HiPath 3000 version.

During the course of product development, the application requirements for the Linux operating system and the underlying server PC as well as the handling were regularly adapted to meet the latest demands.

So far, the following versions of OpenScape Office HX have been released.

Supported Linux Distribution

HiPath 3000 V8 with OpenScape Office

OpenSuse 10.3 (x86)

1.2Overview of OpenScape Office LX

OpenScape Office LX is a PC server-based communication platform with integrated unified communications applications. Linux is used as the server operating system.

So far, the following versions of OpenScape Office LX have been released.

2Provision of Hardware and Software

2.1Provision of Hardware

SEN does not provide PC hardware for OpenScape Office HX / LX. The required server PC hardware must be purchased on the market. The minimum requirements for the PC hardware are specified here as an orientation (see section 3.1.1).

2.2Provision of the Linux Software

SEN provides the OpenScape HX / LX software and the required Suse Linux operating system on separate physical media. At present, DVDs are used as the software media. "Suse Linux Enterprise Edition (SLES)" is being currently supplied.

2.3Provision of the Linux Support Activation Code

SEN supplies a support activation code for the Linux operating system together with the Linux software. The activation code is supplied on the DVD case of the Linux operating system.

This activation code is required to obtain security patches and software updates. The Linux software is, however, also fully functional without having to enter an activation code.

SEN requires the use of activation code.

The activation code supplied includes software support by Novell for

  • the SLES versions 10 and 11

  • for a time period of 1 year

starting with the registration of the software at Novell.

3SEN Recommendations for the Operation of OpenScape Office

Compliance with the following recommendations ensures the easy installation and operation of a Linux server PC suitable for OpenScape Office HX / LX.

3.1Evaluation of Suitable Hardware

3.1.1Minimum Requirements for the PC Server Hardware

The server PC for OpenScape Office HX / LX must meet the following minimum hardware requirements.

When upgrading from older OpenScape Office HX / LX versions to the current software version, the existing PC hardware must comply with at least these values.

For new installations, the PC should comply with the recommended hardware configuration (see section 3.1.2) so that adequate reserves are available for the use of virus scanners and future versions.

3.1.2Recommended Minimum Configuration for the PC Server Hardware for new installations

For a new installation of OpenScape Office HX / LX, the server PC should meet the following minimum hardware requirements.

Resource

OpenScape Office HX V2 / OpenScape Office LX V3

To minimize the risk of hardware incompatibilities, the server PC should be certified for use with the Suse Linux Enterprise Version released with OpenScape Office. In the absence of SLES certification, the Linux / SLES suitability should be verified with the respective PC manufacturer or vendor.

Some PC manufacturers offer their own Linux installation disks that are optimized for the specific hardware features of their server PC models. These can be used if they support the Linux version released for OpenScape Office.

Despite certification of the PC hardware, the PC could potentially also have some additional hardware installed (e.g., a LAN interface card or graphics card) that is not compatible with Linux. In such cases, a suitable driver must be requested from the card manufacturer. If no driver is available, the corresponding card must be replaced by a Linux-compatible model.

The URLs for the appropriate information pages on the Internet are listed in this document in chapter 8.

3.1.3Novell-/SLES-certified Hardware

The company Novell offers PC hardware manufacturers a certification program called "YES" for the certification of their hardware components. The results of the certification are available on the Internet.

The URLs of the corresponding information pages are listed in section 8.2.1
