SKILLSUSA NATIONAL LEADERSHIP CENTER BACKGROUND
Almost from the founding of VICA in 1965, there was talk and planning for a national center or headquarters for the National Organization. The FFA was the only other organization to have already accomplished this in the Mount Vernon area. Our search included that area as well as the Loudoun County area along the Potomac River. Many sites were visited over the Year Awards between 1968 and 1972 when it was settled on the present property.
In 1972, the organization purchased a little over 41 acres of land for approximately $90,000 or $2,200 per acre. Two other CTSOs each purchased 2 acres land in Reston, Virginia about the same time for the same price SkillsUSA paid for its 41 acres. The organization began immediately to raise money for building its headquarters on the new land. The first program was “Building Blocks for the Future”, the second was “Pennies for the Center” and the final fundraising program was “The Great VICA Land Rush.” Plaques recognizing the donors to each of these programs are in the hallway. Together, these campaigns raised about $100,000.
The plans for the Center began to take place and construction started with the ground breaking, on October 15, 1978, held in conjunction with that year’s WLTI, where about 200 students and teachers participated in the historical event. The groundbreaking shovel is located in the upper lobby.
On December 9, 1979, the dedication of the building took place where the trowel of George Washington was used to place our cornerstone. The cornerstone is a piece of Virginia Sandstone, and came from the 1960’s remodeling of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. A certificate near the cornerstone marks the Center as the “First National Capital Heritage Building.”
In 1982, the organization purchased an additional 50 acres of land just north of the original parcel. This land costs the organization $125,000 or $2,500 per acre. Recently, we found out that the land owned by SkillsUSA is worth between $25,000$30,000 per acre.
The building and land costs totaled $1.7 million dollars, and in February 2005, SkillsUSA paid off all the Center debts.
Additional Notes:

  • The construction company used for the Center, Charles H. Tompkins Construction, is the same company that did the addition to the National Art Gallery and, more recently, the World War II memorial, both on the Mall in Washington, D. C.

  • The building was built using union labor.

  • The design of the building was such to showcase the skilled craftsman, example: the immense oak woodworking and the all brick construction.

  • The location was picked because of the historical significance of the area, Loudoun County having many historical sites from the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. During the War of 1812, Leesburg, Virginia, just 8 miles away, housed the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution and was headquarters for most of the government at that time.

  • Original purchase of land was for developing a “campus” atmosphere, for adding housing for conference attendees, a conference and research center and facilities for other organizations to be headquartered.

  • The fireplace is made of fieldstone, which is prevalent in the area, and in colonial times many houses and walls partitioning the farms and plantations were made of the same stones.

  • The fireplace area was designed to promote conversations and social activities while at the Center.

  • This is the only headquarters of the SkillsUSA organization.

  • There are “knockout” panels in the west wall of the lobbies, both upper and lower, that were in the design for access to a future additional conference facilities and a museum.

  • Each of the meeting rooms was designed with the sliding barn doors to be opened and to allow natural light in, plus allow participants to appreciate the rural surroundings of the Center.

  • There are trees around the parking lot with placards indicating either individuals or groups/schools who donated them for memorials. Most significant of these are the 14 Spruces lining the entrance which were given by the Texas Association.

  • The hallway leading to all meeting rooms is the Hall of Honor and displays some of the history of the organization.

    • As you round the corner to the hallway, you first see the original architect’s drawing of what the Center would look like.

    • Also, you will see several large plaques showing

      • National Staff Year Awards of service

      • Board of Directors

      • International Degree Recipients

      • Honorary Life Members

    • On the carpeted wall are the pictures of all National Officers since1965 including last year’s group. The current officers are shown near the entrance to the main offices. Each picture indicates the office held and their state affiliation

    • Further down are artifacts depicting our origin in the form of banners and memorabilia of state organizations that existed prior to the formation of the national organization in 1965.

    • On the opposite wall, there are many significant items.

      • A plaque holding a coin that went on the Second Columbia Shuttle mission in November 1981.

      • Plaques recognizing other groups and associations support

      • Membership achievement plaques

      • SkillsUSA’s incorporation papers

      • The three plaques showing donors to the fundraising efforts for the Center

      • Original artwork done in 1965 by students of the original emblem

      • Picture of President Ronald Reagan greeting students

      • And the pin collection done by Mr. Ray Scantlin of Oklahoma

  • Outside, in front of the building, are two marble benches given by Georgia VICA

  • In the upper lobby, as you enter the main offices, are pictures of the current National Officers and the current Board of Directors.

  • Outside, to the right of the front parking lot, is “Retirement Row” where trees are planted and dedicated to retiring employees.

  • Paver Campaign to replace walkway to the front of the building was started in June 2014.
