Students must completeCalculus prior to the start oftheir junior year and Calculus-basedphysics priorto thestart oftheirsenior year.Students who havetaken Calculus orCalculus-basedphysics for college creditin high school, which the collegehas validated, must completeoneadditional college course ineach ofthose areas to satisfythis requirement. CollegeProgram students are required to completetwo semesters of advanced mathematics and two semesters of physical science. Weencouragethese studentsto complete calculus intheir freshman year andphysics intheirsophomore year to enhancetheir competitiveness fora scholarship. The following arethe required coursesfor allmidshipmen. These courses areinstructed bythe Unit
Staff Officers, and oftenmust be taken in addition to a normal collegiatecourseload.
Students are requiredtomaintain a Grade Point Averageof2.5 (on a 4.0 scale)to remainin goodstanding.
Physical Training All students are requiredto maintain a minimumlevel of physicalfitness as prescribed bytheNavyand Marine Corps. There are two battalion PT sessions scheduled each week.
NavyOption midshipmen arerequired to achievea minimum of “Good” on the twice-annual Physical Fitness Assessment (PFA),which includes two separate portions; height andweight standards (bodycomposition assessment) and the physical portion consistingofatoe touch, curl-ups, push-ups, and a1.5 mile run. Students who achieveless than theminimum scorewillbeplaced on the Remedial Physical Training Program, which meetsone additional dayeach week. Theofficial PFA is taken near the end of each semester, usuallyin November andApril. An inventory PFA is taken every semester in Septemberand in February to provide another benchmark.

A Pre-EntryPhysical TrainingPlancan bedownloaded from theNaval ReserveOfficers Training Corpswebsiteto assist in preparingyour student for Freshmen Orientation and to starton the path to ahealthyfitness lifestyle.
Swimming Requirements NavyPhysical Fitness also includes swimmingproficiency. There arethreeswimmingqualification levels. The3rd Classtest will be administered during Freshmen Orientation, and includesajump from a 10 foot platform, fiveminutes ofsurvival treadingwater, a 50yardswim usinganyoffourbasicsurvival strokes, and survival floatation skills usinguniform items. All midshipmen arerequired to qualifyas 3rdClass Swimmers prior to summer trainingbefore their sophomoreyear. Weak ornon- proficient swimmers shouldconsider formal swim instructionprior to Freshmen Orientation.
