THERE IS ALREADY A LOT OF NUCLEAR WASTE TO BE DISPOSED OF –
CREATING MORE WOULD POSE EVEN GREATER ENVIRONMENTAL
RISKS
James Flynn and Paul Slovic 1995 (senior researcher with Decision Research, president of Decision research and prof of psychology at the University of Oregon, "YUCCA MOUNTAIN A CRISIS FOR POLICY Prospects for America's High-Level Nuclear Waste Program" Annual Rev. Energy Environ. 1995. 20:83-118 The amount of HLNW to be managed and disposed of depends on future nuclear power generation and production of nuclear weapons. Current estimates, assuming no new nuclear power plant construction, are for about 100,000 metric tons of heavy metal (MTHM) from commercial reactors and perhaps the equivalent of 15,000 MTHM from the nuclear weapons complex (1). Commercial spent fuel is now stored at more than 70 sites, the majority located east of the Mississippi River. The lack of a HLNW program acceptable to the public has been repeatedly cited as one of the major reasons for the current moribund condition of the nuclear power industry and its poor prospects for the future. The possibility that HLNW might be stored for extended periods at or near the reactors where it was produced, in lieu of an operating waste facility, has motivated the communities and states near these reactors to call for prompt and effective actions to remove those wastes.
