1.1 Language is Sound What is produced by the organ of speech is sound which represents what in the speaker’s mind. For example, the word chair consists of five different sounds. When the word chair is produced, the hearer interprets it as the speaker does. Producing the sound is not just a random movement of the speech organs, but each organ works in a regular way from the act of inhaling till the shaping of the sounds. If we want to say ‘chair’ we don’t utter each sound separately, we move our organs of speech continuously and we produce continuous sounds. All human beings produce these speech sound with essentially the same equipment.
