1.2 Research Problem
The ability to automate, control and monitor appliances remotely is a feature of smart homes that supports efficient usage of electricity. Being able to turn on and off appliances from anywhere and increased automation can significantly reduce on the monthly electricity bill of

2 a home. The price of a kilowatt hour of power is currently at UGX 605.775 in Uganda [10]. This is quite expensive for the average Ugandan. Therefore as our dependency on electrical appliances continues to increase the need to use this electricity as efficiently as possible becomes indispensable. The problem that arises however is that fora typical Ugandan household to be converted to a standard smart home with energy management abilities and remote control of appliances, various devices will have to be bought and the cost of this can add up to become quite lump sum. The average price range to automate a home is between
$2,000 and $6,000. This is without alteration to the existing electrical wiring installed and these smart home technologies are referred to as plugin devices and operate and communicate with each other wirelessly. The costs increase significantly when hardwired systems are to be installed, as will be seen. In simple terms, the concept of remotely controlled and automated home electrical systems comes with a hefty amount of financial cost attached to it that many Ugandan homeowners cannot afford.
1.3 General Objective
To develop smart Internet of Things (IoT) enabled System for Home Energy Management, Control and Automation that can be easily integrated into an already existing residential home electrical installation system to provide the homeowner with seamless close range and distant wireless control and automation overall essential electrical appliances, with minimal alteration to the already existing electrical installation and devices.
1.4 Specific Objectives

To eliminate the necessity of purchasing conventional smart devices. To provide homeowners with the ability to switch on/off any appliances. To remotely monitor sensitive and large appliances. To provide mobile companion application for control, monitoring and sending commands. To integrate energy saving capabilities and energy usage limits. To provide control from both close range via Bluetooth or WiFi and long range using
GSM
